I have been having a lot of issues with my desktop (specs below). I bought this computer a couple years ago and was never very happy with the performance. Currently the slowness of the computer (slow to load, programs freezing or becoming non-responsiveness) is driving me insane especially because I am working from home.. The computer has a 1TB hardrive of which only 146GB is being used. It has 8GB RAM installed, so I am thinking maybe I should try to change my processor??? But my current processor has good reviews, so I am not actually sure that is the issue. It doesn't have any viruses. Any thoughts on what I should do it improve my desktop's performance?

Your PC has fairly basic hardware, a budget Cpu with built-in Graphics, which will limit it's performance.
It's hard to say if it will work with a better Cpu and/or Graphics card.
To fit a better Cpu the Bios has to support it, so unless you can find someone online who has already done so for a particular Cpu it's a gamble.
The problem with fitting a Graphics card is will the PSU be able to handle it, brand name PCs are not designed for upgrading and will usually have a PSU that is just powerful enough to handle the original hardware.

What is the exact serial number(S/N) and product number(P/N) on that HP desktop?

Once we know its exact model number and its exact hardware specs, it will be easier to help you.

This is the performance ratings of its processor and integrated graphics.

Adding another 8 GB of RAM and switching to a solid state drive(SSD) will definitely improve speed and snappiness. (y)

Ok, you have this HP Pavilion 590-p0024 Desktop PC and it's about 2 years old. It should have been shipped with Windows 10 Home, but you have Education version which I believe is meant for computers within an academic institution that uses volume licensing, and not for personal use.

The hard drive is a 7200RPM SATA Drive and the processor seems to be a low-end/budget chip so that may be a few reasons for the slowness. I had to change my son's hard drive (SATA drive) to a SSD drive and it made a big difference, as in everything was more smoother.

While the memory is usually sufficient, you may need more if you are trying to do more intensive stuff. The machine can handle 32GB maximum. That is something to consider.

So, what is your day to day use of the this computer? Do you tend to leave programs open, have multiple tabs open? What programs are you seeing issues with?

Thank you for the response. In terms of my day to day use, I am a researcher and have been working from home so I often have multiple programs open at the same time. Usually outlook, word, excel, google chrome with multiple windows, trello, and spotify. The only heavy duty program I use is Stata statistical package from time to time, although I can only use it with smaller datasets otherwise the program will freeze.

I have Windows education because I work for a university, which gives us a free copy, and Bitlocker was not available in my previous windows version.

I bought the computer new and it originally had Windows Home. I have Windows education because I work for a university, which gives us a free copy, and Bitlocker was not available in my previous windows version, which is required to get on the VPN.
