HP C6180 printer has become a big doorstop

I am running Vista on a Dell XLS computer. The HPC6180 worked fine . . . until I received a request from HP to upgrade drivers. Then nothing worked. I had to re-install the original software and things worked once again.

So I made the big mistake of allowing another HP upgrade and once again nothing works. What I have is a Printer Offline designation in Control Panel for the default C6180 printer and there are 2 other copies of this printer in Control Panel. None of them show "offline" but this one does. This is the one which also has 4 documents in queue. I can't get any of them to print.

I used HP's print and scan troubleshooter and it said everything was working perfectly I was even able to print a test page. I have no low ink warnings and no warning lights. I simply can't get the printer "online." This is a local printer not connected to a network although I have a wireless router in the system but this printer is wired.

When I go to Device Manage, everything is said to be working properly.

I'm sure it's something very basic but I can't figure it out.

Cancel any and all print jobs, uninstall the HP printer software from "Programs & Features" in the "Control Panel", disconnect and reboot the computer, delete any left over HP printers. Reboot again and verify there are no HP C6180 printers listed, if there are make sure there's no jobs int he queue and delete it again. Then use either the disc or the full download from the HP website to reinstall the printer; don't plug in the printer until it tells you too.
I canceled the 4 print jobs in the queue. I removed the 3 instances of the HP c16180 in control panel>printers. I disconnected the computer and the USB cable to the all-in-one. However, when I went to "Programs & Features in control panel, I saw all the below HP software and wasn't sure which of these should be uninstalled:
HP Customer Participation Program 8.0
HP Driver Diagnostics
HP Imaging Device Functions 8.0
HP ORC Software 8.0
HP All-in-One Driver Software 8.0.A
HP Photoshop Essential
HP Product Detention
HP Solution Center 8.0
HP Update
HP Supply

Also, it appears that if the fix you suggested works, that I should no longer agree to have the updates installed because this problem happened before after updating. I was able to get the printer to work by reinstalling the software but I notice I had 3 instances of the HPc6180 listed in Control Panel.

Whenever you install a software driver package for a HP printer/all-in-one, do not choose the default/full install option.
Choose the custom/advanced installed option.
That will allow you to select what apps you want/need to install without installing all the unneeded apps.
The apps that I've highlighted in bold text are the only apps you really need to install.

HP Customer Participation Program 8.0
HP Driver Diagnostics
HP Imaging Device Functions 8.0
HP OCR Software 8.0
HP All-in-One Driver Software 8.0.A

HP Photoshop Essential
HP Product Detection
HP Solution Center 8.0
HP Update
HP Supply

If you need to uninstall the software driver package so you can reinstall it, do the following.
Uninstall HP All-in-One Driver Software 8.0.A
Select the option to uninstall all other apps that are associated with the printer.
After the uninstall process is complete, restart the computer.

Note: Assuming you're using a USB printer cable, the uninstall/install process should advise you when to disconnect/connect the cable.

Here is the support site for that oversize HP Photosmart C6180 All-In-One printer.

You should add and save this site in your browser's favorites/bookmarks list so you can quickly refer to it when needed.

The "Solve a problem" and "How to" sections can come in handy at times.

If the install disc that came with that printer has an older version, here is the most current version of the full-feature software driver package for it for Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit.

You should uninstall ALL the HP software, then reinstall only what you need.
To add to post #6.

If the HP All-in-One Driver Software 8.0.A uninstall does NOT give you the option to remove all the apps associated with that printer or it does NOT remove all the apps in the "Programs And Features" list, follow Rob's advice.

Since your computer is a Dell and is not a HP, you can go one step further afterwards by deleting any leftover HP folders that are inside the C:\Program Files folder.

Restart the computer after uninstalling the apps.

Restart it again after deleting any HP folders.

You should then be good to go with the reinstall.

When I marked this solved, my reply disappeared which was a thanks for your support.
Unfortunately, the problem has reappeared. I went to print today and while the printer didn't show as "offline" Control Panel>printers, when I tried to print a PDF, nothing happened. I then tried to uninstall all instances of HP on my computer and did so. I then tried to install the software from my disk and noticed that there was an red x showing that the printer driver didn't install but other drivers did.

So I'm now going to try to use the link that was sent here for the most updated installation and see if this takes care of it. Unfortunately, I'm applying for a job and need to print the pdf so I can fill it out then scan it into a file and send it from my computer to the company's email address. If I can't get this thing to work, and I'm really beginning to hate HP, I'll have to go to Staples and do it from there. I can't imagine why this is happening. The printer worked fine until I received an update request from HP. After that, all this nonsense started up.
Ok, I uninstalled everything HP again and this time I installed the software from the above link rather than from my program disk. Everything went through and the printer works again. . . for how long, I can't imagine.
