Great printer, Very few problems over the years. Now I get "Printer failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP."

Did that, several times. Tried disconnecting power cord, plugging into wall socket (been using power bar for years w/o problems.) Tried to use HP Smart, nothing. Tried to download firmware, it won't allow me to select printer (which shows up right there; it sees it.)

Any ideas? Long out of warranty.

Okay, I tried the "how to fix hard reset...system failure" YouTube clip, did not work. I tried it four times, as he indicated sometimes you have to.....nothing. Same result each time. Not sure what to do at this point. I have the Instant Ink program, maybe I should try all new cartridges....? Anything else I can try?

Or at least one at a time. I have seen were a faulty cartridge cause these problems and replacing with a genuine OEM cartridge fixed them. But I have also seen were users spent a lot of money on all new cartridges and the problem was not resolved. So then ended up having to replace the printer, wasting all that money on the new cartridges.

IMO, since you did a "cold" reset (unplugging power from the wall), I suspect it is time to shop for a new printer. :(

Well, that proved to be the case: HP tech support spent a bunch of time on the phone with me (which I appreciate) and we discovered that my cartridges were covered with leaked ink. Disaster. The printer is over 5 yrs old, they would offer no deals whatsoever, just said "go check out HP.com." So I guess I'm in the market for a new printer. I was very happy with the 8610: few problems over the years, just reliable and easy to manage, especially w/Instant Ink--so I'll probably just opt for the closest upgrade I can find.

Yes, Instant Ink for years, so all my cartridges come direct from HP. He told me that with the printer being over five years old, there was nothing they could do. I considered cleaning it up myself, but it would be very difficult....just getting proper access in there would be pretty tough....I'm not a repair-type who would feel confident trying to remove the carriage, etc. Not a simple task at all.

".....make all their money selling ink." Well.....in fairness, I'm guessing they ALL do, as far as inkjets. I used exclusively Epson for probably 15-20 years; so did my dad, who was really into photography so I followed his lead pretty much. Anyway, Epson printers seemed to have the best photo quality (talking consumer-level), and the printers were relatively inexpensive: (wow, great photo quality, only $79!) But the cartridges were expensive as heck, the printers were frequently unreliable, and it was never worth it to pay for repairs; you toss it, get a new one. My strategy was always to get generic cartridges; they worked fine....usually. Then when I said "never again" to Epson and switched to HP, I was very satisfied w/their Instant Ink program: I was a teacher, did a TON of printing, and for several years I was thrilled with my 8610. Had one at school, another at home, so using both was seamless and consistent: very little hassle.
