I am running windows 2000 and ran some windows updates a couple of days ago. Now when I boot up my PC it gets all the way to the message loading windows settings then freezes up while clocking. I'm not sure how to fix this. Can someone please help.

Can you boot to safe mode. Keep tabbinb on F8 key after memory count, then select Safe Mode.

If you able to get to the desktop in safe mode, then you may want to clean up the startup group items.

Please post results.

What exactly do you suggest in the start up should be cleaned up?

The only things I allow to start on bootup on my machine are my anti virus and firewall.
Personally,I don't find it that difficult to start programs when I need them and shut them down when I am done with them.So ultimately the choice is up to you.Realistically speaking,you don't have to have anything in startup but ,once again, anti virus and firewall should be there.
