Tom,
First check to see if the system restore has been turned off.
Start>Control Panel>System, click the system restore tab.
make sure "Turn off System Restore" is not checked.

When you see the calendar click the arrow in the upper left corner, this will take it back to december. Then choose a date in
BOLD. Follow the rest of the wizard.

Have you been getting any error messages for low disk space?
Start>Control Panel>System, click the system restore tab, How much space are you allowing for restore?
Do this:
Click Start , and then click My Computer .
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options .
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders .
Clear the Hide protected operating system files check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
Click OK .
Open the System Volume Information folder.
Open the Restore folder.
How many folders are inside?

Tony, I dont know if i can get system restore to work yet but if i do in this part of the instructions (in the restore window) This is the question>>>In the Restore point description box, type a name to identify this restore point. System Restore automatically adds to this name the date and time that this Restore Point is created. I want to go back to BEFORE i got that virus i had last week! It says type a name in the box? Does that mean i can put the name of the virus? I am a little slow at this because i never did it before! Also i dont know exact date I got that virus but i want to go back two weeks, just to make sure!

I'm not running XP myself, but the 'name' you're referring to, is just so that you'll know how to retrieve this particular restore point, if you'd ever need to.
What you call it is your choice entirely.

The first MS link should provide you with all the information you need.
The link didn't properly point to the MS article, so here it is again:

HOW TO: Restore Windows XP to a Previous State (Q306084)

Good luck,
