how to replace SULFNBK.exe

1634 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  sueher
I received an urgent message under a friends name in an email. This message warned me about a virus she may have passed on to me. I was directed to delete SULFNBK.exe immediately or lose my hard drive. The message said the virus was slow working and so would not be picked up by Norton or McAfee antivirus programs. Since it was someone I knew , I deleted . Then I sent the warning to those I had contacted and learned this was a hoax. Later I learned that my friend had not even sent it, although I can't see how someone could have used her name to me. My server tells me I deleted something essential to Windows 98 and suggested going on the net to find out how to replace it. Please help me.

Hi dewen1,

We are on the same boat. I just did the same thing as you did and so I am also seeking advice as how to replace this.

Is this gonna have disastrous effect or harm?

Hope someone out there could help and would appreciate very much.

Go to the above site for instructions.

Thanks a lot Wino!

Just one more question: in the future if I receive the same virus alert messages like this one, what sources or help sites will I be able to verify and confirm whether this is a hoax or not; apart from the one I was given already; since there might be a diverse range of viruses? thanks so much.
lmhlo you are most welcome.

Go to home page of site

and sign up for their newsletter to be sent to your email address. This will keep you pretty current on most, if not all, hoaxes and other crap you get with falsehoods from well meaning "friends" in your email.

the Virus Encyclopedia at symantec/norton's site is another good source of up to date info whether it's real or hoax viruses
So where do I go for help? I thought this was a MSN help department. What do I do to replace SULFNBK.exe ?Are there any technicians to help members? I'm not interested in hearing from other poor snooks who were hoaxed like myself unless they found a way to repair the damage done.

if you click on the link that Wino gave you then you will find out how to restore the sulfnbk.exe file.
Dewen1,

You seem to misunderstand what this board is about.

We are not a part of MSN, but just a collection of computer users like yourself.

The nice thing about this, is that the collective experience of the members usually allows you to find solutions to computer problems faster, than you would otherwise.

I don't think that you categorizing the people who have been willing to help you solve this as 'poor snooks', will encourage others to rush to your assistance.

However, let's assume that this is just due to a misunderstanding on your part...

Here's a MS article which will explain this, and tell you how to solve it: Description of Sulfnbk.exe and How to Replace the Program File

Good luck,

I went in and tryed to extract the sulfnbk.exe and followed the directions and it said it was sucessfully extracted...but when I run a search Its not found? Any ideas?
Did you look in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND ? It should be there if it was extracted correctly.
Thank you ladylisa.....yes it was there...what a relief!ha:D
You're welcome, glad you found it :)

Just got the following email post from Symantec today - so much for their prompt news letter with warnings:

1. Sulfnbk.exe Warning

The Sulfnbk.exe Warning message has been sent out by email. It is a hoax and should be ignored. The virus does not exist. A hoax is usually an email message that gets mailed in chain letter fashion describing an unlikely type of virus. While this particular email message is a hoax, the file that is mentioned in the hoax,
Sulfnbk.exe, is a Microsoft Windows utility that is used to restore
long file names. If you get an email message that mentions the
Sulfnbk.exe virus and asks you to delete the Sulfnbk.exe file and
forward the warning to everyone in your address book, please ignore the email message and delete it. For complete information about the Sulfnbk.exe hoax and sample Sulfnbk.exe email messages, point your browser to:

I found the file, but when I click on it I get
an error, Bad Command Line Format.:(
Did you try to restore it? This is for Win98 and SE.

Go to Start --> Run
Type SFC and hit enter.
Click on "Extract one file from installation disk"
In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" box, type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SULFNBK.EXE and then click on "Start"
On the next screen, you'll see a "Restore from" box. Type in the path to your Windows CAB files (usually C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS). If you can't find the CAB files on your computer, insert your Windows 98 CD and then type *\Win98, replacing * with the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive. For example, if your CD-ROM is your D drive, you would type D:\Win98
Click the OK button.
I got the file to restore, but when I double
click on the folder I get an error: Bad command line format.
Is that good or bad? Also I tried the Win98 CD,
& I received an error, file not found.
What about the Microsoft Win98 Boot disc?
Is there anything on it? Would like to fix
this problem soon because I am selling it
to my dad.
