hallo,
not a techie person. Windows 7 home premium. On old laptop F5 listed folder contents in name ascending and F2 prompted to rename a file. New laptop -- HP pavilion g6 -- F5 brings up firefox, yuk ! and F2 does nothing.
QUESTION
how do i program new laptop's F2 and F5 to behave like they did on my old laptop?

thanks, karaman

Click Start or windows key,
Type keyboard in search box,
Click keyboard or Microsoft keyboard, in Programs list.
On key settings tab, select key you want to change like F5,
To change the Command or the Program assignment. Click "configure"
To change or assign a macro to the key, click "assign/manage macro".
Select appropriate options and follow the instructions.
You can choose what program to open by choosing like Iexplore.exe to open internet Explorer.
Or word.exe to open MS Word, etc.

And that's about all I recall on iphone and it's hard to remember executables here.

On your old laptop, what program were you running to map function keys to instructions? If you don't know, what was the brand and exact model so I can determine what program managed hotkeys.

On your new laptop, what model g6? Again, so I can determine what program manages hotkeys.

Google "sharp keys",mapkeyboard, keytweak - sorry had a pavilion desktop with Ms keyboard on bench and just had loaded it.

Laptop the above programs allow tweaking of keys, instructions good and they're freeware.

You'll have to read manual or read me's been awhile since I've used 7 home premium[emoji41]

Just set restore point to CYA .

had a look, reviews good but nothing is ever 'free' is it? i dont want it to harvest my bank account numbers...i'll just get used to what i've got. thanks, karaman

i havnt a clue how to find out what model either machine is,
Turn both laptops over and look at the labels.
Don't type in any Windows serial numbers.
Look for model manufacturers ID and S/N that would be on any non-Microsoft label.

old lappy = pavilion dv6 1210sa
new (second-hand) lappy only has microsoft label but says hp pavilion g series on the chassis.
dont think this helps you much, sorry.

chap advises i use freeware but dont want to as it is never 'free' - i dont want it to harvest my bank account numbers, etc.
thanks, karaman

Old laptop https://support.hp.com/us-en/produc...avilion-dv6-1200-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3872814/model/3976065/manuals

Under software and drivers then Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices one of the items is HP Quick Launch Buttons.
That's probably what was used.
This package contains the software that enables the Quick Launch Buttons, which are special function keys on HP Notebooks, to be programmed for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.
Looking at Pavilion g series
I found something under Software-Solutions
https://support.hp.com/us-en/driver...rivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-g6-1a00-notebook-pc-series/5048672/model/5078477
HP Quick Launch Software
This package contains the HP Quick Launch Software, which enables special function keys on supported notebook models to be programmed.
This sounds similar to what you had.

There are 9 g4 models, 15 g6 models and 8 g7 models.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/products/laptops/pavilion-notebooks
So yours could be any one of those 32 models.

Right click computer, select properties then post what it says aside of processor.
I might be able to eliminate some of those 32 models based on the processor.

hallo plodr,
gosh you,ve done a lot of searching on my account. i feel humbled as i dont know nothin'!
processor on new lappy says Intel(r) Pentium(r) CPU B940@2.00GHz 2.00GHz
i.ve looked at the g series but none of them have B940.. there s QB86something but that seems the closest. dont know if i should put you to any more trouble. your efforts much appreciated.

The B940 has to do with the Pentium chip in the computer so it doesn't refer to a model number of your laptop.
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_Dual-Core/Intel-Pentium Mobile B940.html
it is a dual core processor.

In the search/run box when you click on the orb (formerly, start) type in HP Support Assistant. Select My devices and the Product number should show it HP Support Assistant is still on the laptop.

And if that doesn't work, this should:
  1. Turn on the computer by pressing the Power button.
  2. Immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until a startup menu appears.
  3. Press the F1 key or select System Information from the Startup Menu.
  4. The product number and other identification numbers are shown on the screen.

Fn + F5 on a laptop, at least the three I have in the house, cycles between the laptop display, a secondary monitor or projector and both.

The OP is interested in getting back the F5 hotkey function, not Fn + F5 which is entirely different.

The original laptop came with a program
F5 listed folder contents in name ascending and F2 prompted to rename a file.
HP Quick Launch Buttons. That's why the OP was able to hit F5, not Fn + F5 to sort a folder by ascending names and hit F2, not Fn +F2 and have the rename box popup.

All laptops have icons on the F2 through F12 keys (some might be blank) in a different color that displays what happens if you hold the function key and hit an F key. Sorting and renaming are not possible actions.
Possible actions are: toggle wifi on/off, put the laptop to sleep, toggle the display, turn the backlight off, toggle touchpad on/off, turn speakers on/off, turn num lock on/ off and turn scroll on/off. The keys might change from maker to maker but those actions are pretty standard in all laptops.

I am trying to find the exact model of the new laptop to see if a program like HP Quick Launch Buttons exists.
