My PC is running IE8 on XP SP3.

In the last couple of weeks the IE8 performance has become increasingly erratic, to the stage where sometimes it just does not load at all, or take several minutes to do so, or loads and then freezes after a few minutes etc. Even when running otherwise 'normally' there will be problems such as web page links not opening, scripts not running etc. I don't think that it is a web access problem as such, as Outlook Express sends/receives with no problem at the same time.

Is there a simple way just to remove the IE8 and re-install it somehow please? There was no OEM Windows CD with my PC, just a 'recovery partition', but as far as I can tell without going too far into it (and risk inadvertently resetting everything back several years !) there is not option just to recover individual components.

I would first try resetting IE8 back to default settings to see if that solves the problem.

Be sure Internet Explorer is closed and then go to the Control Panel - Internet Options - click on the Advanced Tab and at the bottom under Reset Internet Explorer Settings click on the Reset button there and then click on Reset again on the next screen. When it's finished click on Close and then restart Internet Explorer and let us know if there's any difference.

It may have improved a little at first, but perhaps that was just coincidental.

In general, when I click on the IE icon, then the result can be any of the following:-
  1. nothing seems to happen at all
  2. it takes a-g-e-s to load (perhaps a couple of minutes)
  3. it loads, but then locks up while trying to access the home page
  4. it loads, goes alright for short while, then locks up when trying to access a page
  5. it loads, then seems to run for quite a long time without a problem, albeit perhaps a little slow in loading some pages

Out of curiosity I tried using it in the other user-name account on my PC (which has not been used for several months now) and it seems to be quite a bit better behaved, but still not 100% reliable.

Sometimes it can take up to 30 minutes to actually manage to login, load Outlook Express, load IE8, access some webpages and actually do anything useful, including perhaps 1 or 2 logout/login recycles  Yet at the same time Outlook may send/receive quite happily and I can do other things as well (eg Word, use scanner, print). Alternatively, everything suddenly freezes, there are 'bits' of open windows stuck in various places on the screen, yet Task Manager says that the CPU is doing absolutely nothing!

Is the Internet the only thing not running smoothly on your computer?

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

It's not so much the Internet as web-browsing. If I just load Outlook Express that seems to work OK.
At the moment most of what I am doing needs web browsing, so I have not spent a lot of time using only non-IE8 applications, but my impression is that everything is (reasonably) OK until I try to run IE8.

Well, today it wouldn't even load IE and conenct to the home page at all  so I've had to switch to the other user-name to get online. However, the HJT scan WAS done under the normal user-name and is attached below. Hope you can find something as a clue therein !

Try IE8 after booting your computer into Safe Mode with Networking. If all is well in that mode, there must be an application interfering with IE8 in Normal Mode.

To isolate the culprit, try a Clean Boot procedure. Read both pages in my link.

OK, time for an update :)

Running in Safe Mode with Networking seemed to be OK as regards instability, so I moved on to trying to identify the particular Service causing the problem. This provide rather difficult 'cos of the intermittent nature of the fault - using the 'binary chop' approach to testing blocks of Services, I found myself with two 'halves' of the list of running Services, BOTH of which at first seemed OK but then both caused problems :-(

After a lot of effort and cursing etc I believe that I have now tracked at least most of the problem to the service 'ZoneAlarm Toolbar IswSvc'. Without that loaded I have managed to have 3 or 4 browser windows opened and swopped between them, done other things at the same time etc etc, without any real problem other than the occasional temporary stalling - but let it run and eveything goes awry again.

Whilst that seems to have identified the major source of trouble, overall the performance of IE is definitely not as good as it used to be. It is still the case sometimes that I can click the icon without any apparent response (no hour-glass or highlight of the icon) and then wait for quite a while before I can tell if in fact it is going to load or not, and there are still the (fortunately infrequent) occasions when it will 'hang' while trying to load the home page.

Another new oddity now is that, when shutting down the PC, there will appear a brief pop-up error message from ForceField to say that it can't intialise a DLL because the windows session is closing - but what it is trying to load, and why it doesn't seme to have that problem at login, is not known.

Any further advice would be welcome please !
