How to make an internal hard drive an external hard drive

My laptop suddenly stopped working and I went through a list of things to check what was wrong. It wasn't the charger or battery. I want to check if the hard drive has gone or whether I can save all my data. I've been told I can put it into an external hard drive case and attach it to my new laptop via the usb port. Can someone pls let me know how to do this and what how to know what case to get for the laptop hard drive I have?
