Hi,

this is my first shot at linux (mandrake 6.1) on a clean but old HD on a pentium 1 system(133 with 40 meg ram).Got it installed with root and user partitions(?)I get to login in and then to user localhost prompt but cant seem to get to a kde desktop.Says cannot connect to X server among other things.Should it normally boot directly to a desktop/windows type platform?
Or is it just that i dont have the recommended amount of ram to run the os?

TIA
Bill

Here's an old hardware list that you can check.See if your video card is supported.
Get the correct chipset type of your video card and the amount of ram it has and the make and model(or the horizontal and vertical refresh rates) of your monitor and try running(as root) xf86config.You will also need to know the type of keyboard(AT style or ps/2 etc).
