Hi there. I am after any advice as to how to send movie clips to our relatives overseas. My email attachment limit is 10mb but a 5 min movie is around 250mb !!!! Is there anyway I can send clips by email....or do I have to look at setting up my own website? I have looked around and cant find any that mention the ability to upload/download movies. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks

Hello benburb, you'll need to compress the clip down to a more 'friendly size'. If you are on WinXP (or older windows) you can use Windows Movie Maker, which is very easy to use, not the best of course, but easy. Afterall your only making clips to send not trying to rival Cecil B.

Once you've imported the file into WMM you can split it into more managable sizes. And then save the finished article in a number compressions. Practice with a few to see what works best. Remember this does not effect the original at all. You are quite safe.

Good luck

I don't think there's any compression utility out there that will reduce a 250MB file down to 10MB. Some people here have posted about online storage companies. You could try searching the forum for terms like that. Another option is to burn the videos to CDs and mail them.

I have gotten a 300mb video file down to about 10mb using windows media encoder 9 series. It did a good job and i didn't lose much quality at all.

Just repeating ...you can split the 5 minute file into 5 ONE minute files once it's in WMM.

The downside of sending a 10mb file is the mailbox size of the recipient. You'd need to ensure they have that available or you'll be getting it back.:)

You can also upload it to some web space. There is free web space out there (or used to be) and most ISP providers now offer you web space as well as part of your Internet service. And that would be a much better choice because instead of sending the file to 10 different relatives and all of them having a huge e-mail to receive, just send them a link. Some of them will be able to have Windows Media stream it an play it before downloading it all, but they will all have a choice as to what to do.

You'll be surprised how small windows movie maker can get a large file. It has a resize option specifically for e-mail. I got a 57mb file down to 200kb with one of the standard size options. It viewed ok but as you can imagine, the screen viewing size dropped a tad from the original.

Yah, and i think the latest uses what i was talkin about, the wm9 encoder has tons more options tho. or so it seems. OH, and be careful about webspace, some videos may be against their policy, also some filetypes may be against their policy.

So they download it from dropload b/c they get a link? Oh, and is the server fast? Also compression is still recommended b/c u should respect ur downloaders who may be on a slower connection.

Yes. You upload the file to dropload.com.... it will ask you who to send the files to, you enter their email and it will send them an email stating a file has been sent from john doe to you to pick up... the click on the link and you download it (its really fast also)......

p.s. the other party has 3 days to pick up the files other wise dropload will delete them.... you should check it out.

This is the best and easiest way of doing it:

go to www.dropload.com and upload your file

once done, it will send an email out to whom ever you want for them to download your file. its free and easy... i use it all the time.
THat is the other one I was thinking of. But yousendit allows larger file size.
