... and then reduce the number of 'start-up' apps?

Which ones are OK to leave running and which ones are not ???

Go to Start > Run, type Msconfig.

On the Startup tab you'll see almost all applications that start up automatically as Windows loads, and they can be disabled right there.

Some of them however are required, so please don't go wildly unchecking everything in sight.

Instead, use Pacman's List of Startup Applications to determine what should stay and what can go.

In case of doubt, don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
BTW, the AnswersThatWork link is perfect for runing tasks, i.e. the ones you see when pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

For Startup programs in Msconfig/Startup you'll want to use 'my' "Pacman" link.
I Use Startman It Works Great. For info. on whats running and if you can safely shut it down good luck http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcforrest/startman_v1.html
