How do I scan my external hard drive

I have a friend I have known for years that told me that my external hard drive made by Seagate called Free Agent is corrupted which caused my old computer to have severe issues. I sold that older computer. Now this friend is telling me I can never use it again. He suggested that I never open up any files from it, never use it again. I have precious files (pictures and documents on it). I am using it any way, and I haven't seen any issues.

My question is when I plug it into my USB hub, can I use a software program to scan the entire drive, so I can be sure that I am not corrupting my new computer?

First and foremost if you value this data you make backups. Data you do not have at least two copies of [on separate media] is data you do not care about and you should expect to lose said data.
Next if you are worried about the drive, simply scan the drive with the drive mfg's diagnostic.
Here is a link to the seagate support page for external drives;

Thank you crjdriver. I followed your directions and after I backed up all of my files, I ran the seagate diagnostic software and it found no errors. Now I have three backups: One Drive, External Hard Drive and one on my C: Drive :)

I will mark this as solved.
