Hello -

I'm having trouble navigating some websites. Some pages take forever to load and sometimes don't respond at all. I figured, maybe wrongly, that my Active X Contols are not set to get the most out of the internet since I usually get a little notice at the top of the page saying my Active X settings won't allow this or that.

How do I make sure my Active X controls are set so I can get the most out of the internet?

Any help would be appreciated. And if it's not Active X, I'd like to find out what it is.

Thanks.

What version of Windows are you using?

What browser name and browser version are you using?

Are you on 56K dial-up or high-speed broadband?

Open Internet Explorer, click Tools - Internet Options, then use these settings:

General(tab) - Settings:

Every time I visit the web page

50 MB

Security(tab):

Set all 4 zones to "Default Level"

Privacy(tab) - Advanced:

Override automatic cookie handling

First party cookies - Accept

Third party cookies - Block

Always allow session cookies

Connections(tab) - LAN Settings:

Uncheck everything

(Note: Click Apply after changing settings in each tab)

After you're done, click Apply - OK, close Internet Explorer, then restart.

Do you know how to install HijackThis 2.0.2 and use it and post a log here?

OK. I made all the changes and I'll be watching to see if that helps.

I really appreciate your help with this.

I have HiJackThis but don't know how to post it here. Would you like me to do that or is that message on all your responses?

Thanks again.

If you have HijackThis 2.0.2 and not an older version installed, close all open browser windows, run a scan with it(which will take 30 seconds or less), save the resulting log in Notepad, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

No , that's not an automatic message to all my replies.

I'm requesting you post a log so we can what's installed and running in the background and if any obvious infection is present.

OK. Here's that list. I had to do it twice because it froze and wasn't responding the first time and I had to "end program." I have that problem a lot lately.....

I provided the download link for the new version in post #6.

Make sure to install it in its default location, C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis, and not in a temp location or other location.

You have Avira AntiVir and COMODO Internet Security installed and running in the background, so you've got 2 antivirus programs fighting with each other. One of them needs to go.

You've also got the third-party COMODO firewall, so that's possibly contributing to slow loading of webpages.

You've also got Spybot-S&D and Diskeeper and Tuneup Utilities 2004(which is a very old version) and excessive toolbars installed, which is mostly unneeded and adds to the overall performance load.

---------------------------------------------------------------

What is the processor type and speed, and how much RAM is installed?

I went to the COMODO site and brought up COMODO Internet Security(the free version and not the Pro version) and it shows it to contain a firewall and an antivirus. You can read about it here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

You're using an old Dell with an Intel Pentium III 933 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. The less of a system load and graphic load that you have on that computer, the better it'll run.

Can you advise what the service tag number on the sticker is? That's if it's not difficult to get to and read.

That Comodo software you're talking about does have both but when you go to download it you can choose not to have their anti-virus program installed. If I were to choose it I would have had to uninstall the one I already have.

That service tag is: 5D7ML01

Thanks for the service tag number 5D7ML01. According to the Dell site, that computer is a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop and was shipped new in May 2001.

You've already got it maxed out with its maximum supported amount of 512 MB of PC133 SDRAM, so adding more RAM isn't an option. That's another reason why you want to keep the system load and graphics load as light as possible.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you've installed just the firewall program and not the antivirus program, then you're fine.

Personally, I'd get rid of Spybot, Diskeeper, Tuneup Utilities, RoboForm, Iconoid, and anything else that you don't really need that'll lighten the overall load.

OK. Thank you so much for all you help today. Checking out my computer at Dell was an added, unexpected, blessing.

I'll start to weed out programs I don't need. I'm really a fan of Diskeeper though and I'll keep it. It keeps my computer defraged without me having to think about it.

Again, thanks.

Dave:

You're very welcome. :)

I enjoy working on and upgrading and tweaking older desktops, so I've had plenty of experience on how to keep the system load and graphic load in them to a minimum.
