I want to be able to put a word behind the cells, as shown in the picture below.

How does one go about doing this?

Thanks, cant seem to find that on 2007 :( I'll keep looking though.

Have a look at the Page Layout Background option on the ribbon. It might be there.

Incidentally format background shows the graphic but it does not print.

All 2003 keyboard shortcuts work in 2007, so if you know those, you'll still be able to use them. Villan is correct with the Ribbon directions. Page Layout | Page Setup | Background. I hope you're talking about a picture and not the "Page 1" text you are seeing, which is from Page Break View.
