I have created a small project proposal using MS Word 2000. I have a problem creating the Contents (index) page.

for example:

Contents

Mission Statement..................1
Objecjtives of project..............2

The dots do not line-up nicely and when printed the numbers are not aligned. I am aware that I can use the Tab... setting to set the dotted lines and the numbers will align nicely. But, I have to individually set the tab and dotted line for every line.

I think I should be able to set it global so that everytime I finish a line and key in the page number, the dots and numbers will align nicely.

How do I do this?

My system: Pentium III XP os

If you set the format for tab and choose alignment to the right with the dotted lines before you begin your table of contents, it should maintain that format for the entire document.

Not so, as CookieGal has stated. To explain further ; starting with a blank page, type "Mission Statement", then release the keyboard. :) Click on the "tab well"* until you're in Right Tab mode (*it's to the left of the ruler bar ; you can click to cycle through tab & indent options). Click in the ruler at say 16cm to set the tab. Go in to Format -- Tabs one time to set the leader dots. With insertion point immediately after "Mission Statement", press the tab key and type "1".

Press Enter and the tab setting will flow through to the next line.

If you already have x # of lines you want to set a common tab for, you just select all the lines before setting it.

Technically, you could construct a proper TOC (with auto number-updating, hyperlinks, etc.), but that may be a tad overboard for what you're doing.
