How do I adjust table in MS Word so text entered in cells automatically extends cell?

I have a document I'm working on that I'm supposed to use to complete a review of math problems. When I enter text that exceeds the cell parameters, the text "vanishes", as it is invisible behind the lower cell line. How can I adjust the table settings so that the cell extends to fit the text I enter? Note: I tried right clicking on "Table Properties" - Options - Wrap text/fit text etc. etc., but it didn't alter anything. ?What I'd like is for the text entered to follow the cell parameters, and extend DOWN as necessary. (sorry for imprecise wording.)

When I tried AutoFit, the text will continue forever....enlarging the column and disrupting the set structure of the table. I need the text to stay within the original parameters....and remain visible; that is, drop the lower cell border so the text is always visible.
