I might be too dumb to answer this question properly, but I would imagine a computer would not like the primary HD being removed while running. (Because Windows is always writing something to it.) Have you tried putting in 2 drives, and putting the removable one on the secondary IDE channel?

Hot-Swap Drives
Currently, running HOT-Swap drives off primary IDE port of a ASUS moboard. O/S=Win2k Server, problem is that we have to reboot every time we swap out drives. I figure this is at the O/S level and not the hardware level. The reason I'm doing this is that we have six 60gig drives in hot swap carriges. I have setup 6 folders on each of these drives Mon-Fri and 1 Weekly. I'm using incremental backup for Mon-Fri and full backup for the weekly.(1 carrige that holds the weeks worth of backup is held offsite)
The question is does anyone know of a way of regenerating the connection without rebooting? This is my print server, so as long as I wait till after 5pm each its ok, but would like to do a swap in the a.m on Monday's

I did not fully explain everything it appears. Inside my print server, I have 2 drives that are connected to a Promise Raid Controller. These 2 drives are mirrored. These 2 drives also have the O/S on them. So when the computer boots, it goes to the mirrored drive for the O/S. Now the removable drive is an add on drive. The thought here was to use the print server as a location to backup daily files to. The DC is physically another rack mounted server. Using NTBACKUP from the DC and pointing to the removable drive on the Print Server for the location of where to store the files.
