I recently inherited a 4-port hub with an uplink port...Can I share my internet access between my winXP and my win98 computers? I know almost nothing about networking. If this is important, it's an "Intellinet 5-port SOHO hub" I've got broadband.
Currently, I can't hook this up, because I'm missing a keyboard and a really long ethernet cable. Hoping to fix that soon, but I don't want to waste money if this isn't gonna work.
And what is the difference between a hub and a router, anyway?

Thanks, both of you!
I've given up on sharing my internet connection. Now I want to have internet only on my XP box but still be able to share files with my other win98 comp. For this, it would seem I would have to have 2 IP addresses? One from my ISP and one for the hub? I've only got one nic card in each box. Is another card essential for 2 connections?

I have my 2 computers hooked together with a crossover cable. 1 ethernet card in each computer. all you have to do after connecting to 2 together, is run the " network setup wizard" from your XP machine. go to the help section in your XP box , go to index,& type in "network". then you can read up on networks.pay particular attension to "new in XP" & "networks:walkthough". then go to >start>all programs>accesories>communications>network setup wizard. just follow the instructions. mine have XP on each, but i think it will work on other OS's . you can also enable ICS(internet connection sharing), which the wizard does for you. (you tell the wizard one connects directly to the internet and the other through another computer). there's info about hubs and such in there too(on the 2nd page of the wizard, click "checklist for creating a network")read that tooit may give you some ideas, but you probably don't need it with just 2 computers. keep in mind that the wizard will do it for you, all that reading is just to help you understand(uh) more.:D
