History and Bookmarks not functional (Comodo Icedragon)

4409 Views 22 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Revo1
I am using Comodo Ice dragon browser on my Vaio laptop. I know I haven't downloaded any updates. However, just today 3/3/20, I open up my laptop as usual, when I opened up the Comodo Ice dragon browser, a message popped up stating: "History and Bookmark system will not be functional because one of Ice dragon's files is being used by another application. Some security software can cause this problem". I don't know what to do to retrieve back the history and bookmarks. I haven't backup on any of them. I only backup what was on my desktop. This is the first time I encountered this problem. Also I searched for solutions online, however it keeps going back to the same solution but for the Firefox browser. I need answers as to how to resolve this problem.

"History and Bookmark system will not be functional because one of Ice dragon's files is being used by another application. Some security software can cause this problem".
So have you explored the suggestion that it maybe security software - what AV are you using

Comodo Ice dragon is based on Firefox
I suggest you turn of your AV temporarily and see if that allows bookmarks and history to function

I am sure the same procedure for Firefox will function on Comodo
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional

HOWEVER I cannot guarantee it, but the worst that can happen is that you will - be as you are now

The bookmarks are stored in Firefox
This error happens when a database file that stores bookmarks and browsing history (places.sqlite) and related site icons (favicons.sqlite) can't be accessed by Firefox.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

I cannot find similar on IceDragon

but I am reasonably certain it will be the same

AV as in Anti Virus if that is what you mean. I have 2 on. Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes (Free Version). Heads up on that my computer automatically did a chkdsk at midnight the day before this all happened. I tried using Malwarebytes, but it then says that a plugin was missing and can't open it. I am stuck. And I did a recheck, my Firefox wasn't on sync when it all happened. So on my firefox I basically have only one folder, and that was the very folder I saved all links on it and the bookmarks before it crashed. The folders that I input onto the bookmark bars aren't in my firefox. And other bookmarks in Comodo aren't found in my Firefox. I am quite stuck.

This suggests you MAY have a problem with the drive
For Vista to automatically run a chkdsk, what is known as the dirty bit must have been set and if the system has set that, then you may I think presume you have problems

From a command prompt run a chkdsk /r on the C drive
Presuming C is where Windows is installed.

If you get a response that the drive cannot be checked until a dismount is forced - do you wish to Y/N
type N
you should then get a response asking if you wish to run it on reboot - type Y
reboot and run

YOU would be well advised to watch the results to ascertain if there are bad sectors on the drive
We should be able to get the results AFTER the check, but if the drive is failing that may not be possible

Using the command prompt to chkdsk, it denies me and states I do not have sufficient privileges.
That is because you have not opened an admin cmd prompt
Sorry I did not mention that
type cmd in run and then it should be headed admin command prompt
or type cmd in search on start and then choose admin cmd prompt

User Account Control in Vista extends to the Command Prompt. If you get a "you do not have permission..." error, it's probably because you need administrator permissions to run the command. Here's how to run from the command prompt as administrator:

Click Start, in the Start Search box, type command. A list of of matches will appear above. Right-click Command Prompt in Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. You will likely be prompted for an administrator confirmation, or a password. Type your password or click Continue.
First I tried using the command prompt as owner, it says: Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode. I then went to right click it and run as administrator. Did the above. But the message I got was: This type of file is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process, would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N

Should I type Y for this?
Indeed - as I posted
If you get a response that the drive cannot be checked until a dismount is forced - do you wish to Y/N
type N
you should then get a response asking if you wish to run it on reboot - type Y
reboot and run
I appreciate is slightly differently worded, but the answer is YES
type
Y
Drats, now it comes down to startup repair. And I believe it’s looping. I search that it should be 15 to 45 mins. I left it open and went to the laundry. I took at least 2 hours. It’s still in start up repair and I am not a tech expert here.
Using system restore to see if it works. Don’t know but gotta try
Nope, system restore not working and back to startup repair. When I boot the computer, it automatically goes to startup repair.
so were you not able to run the chkdsk cmd
I did what you told me. Using chkdsk cmd, and it stated that the next time the comp boots, it will check that part of the drive. I restarted and booted my computer, it then sent my computer into startup repair. I could not cancel it.
Even using F8 is not working. Everything is going back to startup repair
Used F8 and did the disable auto restart and found out that system volume is corrupted, however this F8 still isn’t solving the loop problem
See if you can boot it from a Seagate disk check for dos

https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/game-drives/playstation/seatools-dos-master/
unless it is a Seagate drive it will only run the basic checks but at least you will get a report

I suspect you will need to replace the drive
Yep I am kinda screwed now
Good luck with it
I cannot I regret follow the meaning of your replies
I suggest a disk check outside of windows and send you the link to make the bootable media

YOU reply
Yep I am kinda screwed now
I cannot even guess what you mean
Need to get it to a repairman to do it. Can’t do it myself. I mean replacing the drive
Good luck with it
