Just thinking that it might help to rename the Security Forum to HijackThis & Security and exchange the position on the front page with the Games Forum to make it more visible. I.E. so that it appears near the top of the screen instead of scrolling to look for it.

There is a greater chance of HJT logs being posted to the one forum where they can receive more specialised attention and where someone could more easily build up a data baes so that HJT logs could be examined automatically.

Thanks to all.

I think renaming the group to something more specific might be a good idea. Should we move the entire "Internet & Networking" group to the top of the page? No matter what we do, I can promise that you'll still get people posting in the wrong place. ;)

It would be nice to get the HiJack This Logs out of the hardware and software forums. Especially when the post just says I'm having a problem here's my log.
It wopuld certainly tidy things up a lot, as you say. The HJT log is more of a security concern than an OS concern, and everyone can see from the HJT log which OS is being used.

Pity HJT doesn't show how much RAM is fitted though. ;)

Howdy

My comment right off quick is if all the HJT logs went to the one forum they would be off the first page in the blink of an eye, resulting in more double post and confusion.

While it seems like a good idea, unfortunately there are just not enough qualified log readers for the volume no matter where they are placed.

just my thought

I would agree to a name change but to "Security and Hijack This" (in that order) and it doesn't really matter where it's located on the page but since it's the most frequently visited forum it would make sense that it should be near the top for easier access.

I'm against the idea of multiple sub-forums under Security for the malware aspect. Some sites have separate forums for trojans and viruses when often the poster doesn't have a clue what they have so wouldn't know where to post.

There could be sub-categories to discuss firewalls, anti-virus programs and general security discussion stuff like that though.

What seperating general security (trojans/vriuses) and HJT logs? Could make HJT logs a seperate forum or just a sub-forum of Security.
Hmmm. Better to be,

Trojans, Virii, Security & HJT logs.
Post your HijackThis logs here.

With a lead-in self-help sticky page like there is now on Security, based on Rollin' Rog's page and being a compendium of all the other advice sticky pages, but moving the Trojan scanners to the top of the page, followed by on-line Virus scanners and on to the other detailed stuff like NEW.DOT removers, Winsock fixes, etc.

Regarding Buck's comment, "While it seems like a good idea, unfortunately there are just not enough qualified log readers for the volume no matter where they are placed." I wonder if there is anyone who could produced a data-based program to read the HJT logs automatically?

Those exist but are not 100% effective and can lead someone to a false sense of security.

Personally I like to see the initial infection prior to any clean up so the proper steps can be take to totally remove it without having to guess the root cause.

I agree with Cookiegal regarding the multiple sub-forums, it will add confusion.

If a new member posts a HJT log in any forum and starts a new thread that's OK with me! :) Sometimes I move them, sometimes not as I don't see a problem with them being in any of the forums, outside of Community where they obviously don't belong.

I think what we do need is *reports* to make us aware of someone not receiving help or effective assistance.

Mike: Along the same line....there seems to be trouble with the "Games Forum" and the "Thread Games & Arcade Discussion Forums"....people posting questions in the wrong "Games" forums....I'd suggest that you have them listed one right under the other on the forums page...thus a person is more likely to be able to distinguish the two from each other by seeing both at one time. :)

I also like the idea of

There could be sub-categories to discuss firewalls, anti-virus programs and general security discussion stuff like that though
But would that just be a discussion place, or something like troubleshooting them when they die, like Software? If so, that would certainly tidy the forum up more.

It's looking good to me. Cookiegal should get in on the intro with that sig. and there should be a list of HJT specialists by Username.
The list of HJT specialists is a great idea if Mike can do it. I mean who actually knows all the users here who can read and fix the logs???

On another note how did you all learn to read and understand them? I t hink its a very good thing to do and was wondering how to go about learning it, it seems to be a very common problem

A list could be a good idea, but people may flood with PM's instead of making threads. Im good at reading hiajckthis logs..but since school i havent had any time to concentrate in the security forum.
