O.K. my OS is Windows 98SE and everything was running all right until I booted up this evening and tried to do some work. The whole machine slowed right up. There are no signs of viruses-I ran the virus hunter first thing and it just got its latest update today-it updates daily. Did get two illegal operation notices, one in connection with Kernel32.dll and the other with VXD, first this has happened. Also when I ran the Scan disk as a preliminary to doing a defrag it advised me that something was trying to write to the hard-drive.
I have a new hijack this log and will try to post it as an attachment to this message.
I'd appreciate it if someone with hijack experience would read the attached hijack log and advise me if I have any problems that need to be removed, killed, beaten, thrashed, or whatever.

Thanks.

Log doesn't look bad. You have one spyware item that should be removed. But before you do that, I suggest you get Spybot and Adaware progs and run them first... just to be on the safe side. To do so follow these instructions:

Download Spybot S&D. Install Spybot, open it and click the Search for Updates button. When updates are found, put a check mark next to all and click the Download Updates button. Now click the Search & Destroy icon in the left pane, then the Check for problems button at the bottom of the window. When the scan completes, check all the items in RED, then click the Fix Selected Problems button.

Reboot your computer

Next, download AdAware. Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning Engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click Proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next)

Reboot your computer.

Now run a new HJT scan. Close all other windows (including this and other browser windows). Put a check mark beside the following object and click Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer.. Run a new HJT scan, save it and post it here. Not as an attachment, but in the body of the post. Just copy it from the saved log file and paste it here in a reply post.

In order of appearance, I ran the Spybot and it produced 0 results; no runs, hits, or errors.
I then downloaded and ran Ad-aware.
After the electronic equivalent of something I suspect might match a high colonic enema for depth of inspection; it found the following:
15 rrecognized objects consisting of 4 registry keys, 1 registry value and 9 files.
When it listed those files it specifically mentioned 2 files attached to cwshredder and designated them as possible malware files.
In the interest of safety, I dumped the entire lot.
Asubsequent rerun of hijackthis showed only one change. The file you mentioned as being a spyware item had been deleted, probably by ad-aware as I had not had a chance to do it myself.
The amended scanlog file is attached below.
Between you and me, I hope this keeps the wolves at bay for a little while.

Log looks good. the only objects I cannot advise you on (because I do not use Netscape or Mozilla) are the two N3 objects. They both address Netscape and use Mozilla preferences, so they are probably OK.

How is your system running? Has the boot problem and speed improved?

Here are some things you can do to prevent reinfection. I use them and recommend them highly.

I strongly recommend you have a firewall. There are a couple of good free ones available for downloading. ZoneAlarm Here, and Sygate Here.

You already have Spybot installed. It has an Immunize feature which will stop a lot of nasties from being installed on your computer. To activate it, open Spybot and click the Immunize icon in the left pane. Now click the Immunize button in the right pane.

Next, download SpyWareBlaster Here. Install it and open the program. Click the Check for Updates button and download the latest updates. Now click Select All then the Protect Against Checked Items. This program will now be running in the background and adding to the protection provided by Spybot's Immunize feature for ActiveX nasties.

Next, download IE-SPYAD Here. Follow the installation instructions on the site. This little item will install a TON of URL's in IE's Restricted sites list, thereby preventing your computer from accessing known bad sites from which nasties can be installed.

Also, be very sure you have installed all the latest Critical Updates from the Windows Update site.

EDIT... Regarding preventive measures, you may want to take a look at This thread.

The following programs are not really bad, but I would ask if you really need them running each and every time you start your PC? Or could you start them manually on an as needed basis?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMPa.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
O4 - Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

The last two, the Office toolbar and Find Fast are big resource hogs. Find Fast really doesn't find that much faster. If you like the Office toolbar I would suggest a desktop icon and start it as needed.

Yes, things are back up to speed. I ran scandisk today, which found some errors and repaired them, then defrag, which ran almost flawlessly-took two tries even with the ME 2000 version but I suspect it was more my preparation than issues it had. I am going to follow up on those immunization suggestions. My security levels are already medium high and I personally wish there was a setting between that and e-paranoid but there isn't. I don't accept strange cookies and even familiar ones sometimes. As for the Netscape and Mozilla entries, glad you brought them up as I deleted Netscape awhile ago-they must be leftovers. Can I have hijack dump them without encountering any problems? As for the the others, they don't interfere with my speed or space so I've left them alone.
Thanks again, Copernicus

If you no longer run Netscape you can have HJT fix those N3 entries. If removing them should result in some sort of problem, you can always have HJT restore them (or any entry removed by HJT).

I'd like to add one other little item I've been using for a month or so now and am real impressed with it's performance. It's called CookieWall. This utility notifies you everytime a new cookie tries to load and gives you the option of loading it permanently, temporarily or deleting when it tries to load then everytime thereafter automatically. My cookie folder never looked so clean. It has 26 cookies and has been that way since I started using CookieWall. It's free Here
