Helping a friend:Graphics/texts being stretched & unreadable

So my friend got a Lenovo Ideapad 100-15IBD [model number 80QQ] roughly a year ago, and recently came to me with a problem that started up a week prior. From the pictures she sent me and a few screen-sharing sessions, it seems there is some kind of graphical issue where the icons and text get stretched out every time something is clicked or selected. This quickly turns everything unreadable (pictures attached), but the laptop still seems to be able to function largely, despite being largely unintelligible.

I hadn't run into this issue before and I surmised it was a graphics card [Intel HD Graphics 5500] issue. I went on to walked her through the steps of updating and/or replacing her graphics card driver, but it didn't seem to correct the issue. I also noticed that during an attempted to restart the driver, the problem persisted while the current driver was disabled. I was wondering if anyone would know how to address this problem before I send her off to a repair shop for a pricey evaluation and repair.

This is a strange one. What happens if they run Windows in safe mode?
