Out 'IT' department have moved everyone over to a new server, (yes while we are still at work), and caused a load of chaos. Most of the links on my desktop no longer work. The main thing that's troubling me is, most of my folders, when opened, have lables with blue text. Our IT bloke says they're compressed files. I don't believe him. What has actually happened, and can I cure it myself, without their intervention. They've caused enough problems.

Sometimes things go wrong, your IT department probably did the best they could.

Folders that appear in blue are compressed.

Right click the folder > click properties > click advanced > untick compress data to save disk space > click ok > click apply > tick apply changes to folder, subfolders and files > click ok and then click ok again.

Well, in this case they're right. The files are compressed. They're probably on a network so ZEUS's advice won't work. You don't have rights to change things on the server. This is normal behavior for modern networks.

There's no reason to uncompress them. You can access them regardless.

EDIT: I highly suggest you leave the system alone unless you're having a problem and know what the solution is. If you look at your own personal system you'll find hundreds of compressed system files. This is normal behavior. I understand you're frustrated with your IT department, but mucking around the system making whatever changes you think are necessary isn't the answer.

I also seem to have lost all my bookmarks in Firefox,(the Firefox icon has changed to a planet?) and my Quicklaunch icons have gone. Our IT department have so many problems now, they regard this as trivial. I don't know what else I may have lost until I come across something.

Can anyone suggest how I can get my profile back? I found my Firefox bookmarks, but when I imported them, closed Firefox down, opened it up again, they'd gone. And any docements I have opened in any application, aren't showing in the recent documents.

If your profile was on the server that they switched from, you're out of luck. You really need to work with your IT department to get these things straightened out. No one here knows what happened with your system and your servers.

EDIT: Unless this is a laptop you had at home with you when IT made system changes, it's possible they touched your specific computer and made changes.
