outlook express is hanging up, then quiting when getting messages. I get an error code, that the system is out of memory. The hardware system is XP, 512 mb ram (only 300 in use) and 25 gig avail on hard dirve. I know little about computers and could use help.

already logged into webmail and deleted all messages, so it must be a software/hardware problem, not a connection problem or actual corrupted message.

512 isn't much, especially if you have a lot of other programs running. You might go into Task Manager and disable some of the programs running in the background to see if that improves OE's performance. You might also increase the page file size and see if that helps (Control Panel / System / Advanced).

Curious to know if you have been in the newsgroups and perhaps downloading files and such? If so, click on tools from the file menu at the top, options, and then the maintainence tab. From there delete and then compact. I have run into this issue when I haven't cleaned up.

Hope that helps!
