Help with External hard drives

I recently bought an external hard drive and it says it is specifically for Mac. If I only plan to use it for time machine backups and file backups on my Mac, do I need to format it or is it already in the correct format since it says it's for Macs? Sorry folks I'm clueless. Also if I want to backup all the stuff I have on an old hard drive to the new hard drive - what is the best way to do it? Would copying and pasting be sufficient or is there something fancier I need to do?

External drives are typically pre-formatted. Simply connect it and use it.

And yes, you can simply copy and paste or Drag-and-Drop. I recommend not "moving" files. Always copy.
