HELP!!! where do I start to correct this? (long)

OK.... well, I finally got hooked up to CABLE. By way of a 4 port router... I am now connected to the internet via CABLE.

The problem is... I went to a couple of sites that test your speed and the results were both disappointing and confusing.

First, my UPLOAD speed was tested very fast... and actually was above the graph line and in the IT ROCKS catagory.

However.... on both sites that I tested on, my DOWNLOAD speeds were horrible. One was 34 kbps and the other about 38kbps... which were listed as OK..... for a 33 modem :(

My goodness... what are some possible solutions to this problem?

My computer is a DELL T450--PIII with 128RAM. The router and NIC card were installed by my roomates brother who has worked in the computer industry for over 20 years and has an outstanding reputation. BTW... the other two computers on the router tested as great for both DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD speeds.

Does this sound like a common situation? Someone reccomended some TWEAKING... however I seem to get various opinions about the effectiveness of TWEAKING... with suggested settings such as MTU, TIME TO LIVE and the other tweak "buzz" settings.

I still have my dial-up adapters installed, should I remove them?

Any ideas, suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

DAVID

http://www.speedguide.net/

try this site all the cable tweaks you need.
good luck.
Thanks for the suggested link.... however, I find that information to be way above my head.... lol

I just am confused at how the UPLOAD speed could be so great... while the DOWNLOAD speed is so horrible.

I would appreciate any opinions as to whether this is common among CABLE service problems.

Thanks in advance

DAVID
Just one more note. I ran a test at PC PITSTOP which indicated that my DOWNLOAD SPEED is 55 kbps... my UPLOAD SPEED is 548 kbps and then they had me check my RECEIVED BUFFER SIZE and it is set @ 2144... if this means anything to anyone.

Again... the difference in DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD speed is staggering. Also... the other two computers in this house are both doing very well on both tests.

Thanks again

DAVID
You said you have Win 2000 and Win 98. Are the download speeds the same with both O/S's?
Have you checked the NIC settings?
Del
Thanks for replying Del. I only have Win98se on my system. I know nothing about NIC settings. I am just wondering about the tremendous difference in my DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD speeds... whether this is common and some suggestions for its solution.

Thanks again.

DAVID
I'm asking if you get the same speeds in Win 2000 and Win 98?
If it's only one operating system, could be a patch would fix it, it in both, then probably NIC setting.
Del
I only use WIN98se. This is the only operating system I have ever used on either of my two computers. I have absolutely NO experience with Win2000.

Thanks again.

DAVID
Try "speedguide.net"
there is a patch for the registry for Win 98 for cabel access.
See if it helps.

WOW... that's all I can say. Because I was a little fearfull of messing around manually with any TWEAKING to correct my horrible DOWNLOAD times I searched the web and found this FREEWARE program called WEB OPTIMIZER-3000 at ZD net and just for the hell of it I downloaded it and installed it.

I then ran the same internet speed tests from two different sites and now my DOWNLOAD speed is well over 2000 kbps and on one test it was actually just over 3000. I am very happy with these results to say the least.

Evidently... this program did something to my settings because now everything is running like lightning. :)

Thanks for the advice I received in here.
