Help Troubleshooting A New PC

502 Views 14 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  crjdriver
I have recently took apart my old pc to complete an upgrade of the CPU, motherboard, GPU, RAM and SSD. However, upon completion everything in my pc powers on with LED indicators however there is no display on my monitor. I have 16GB of corsair vengeance RGB ram and the lights do not come on when I power the system, should they come on with the initial boot? There is also no light indicator on the motherboard under the ‘DRAM’ light, however it does for the CPU.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I return the RAM to amazon?

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Please post a list of the parts you used for the new build, exact motherboard, cpu, ram and graphics card.
Also was the old PC a big brand type like Dell, HP etc ?
Are you using the same case for the new PC that was used for the old PC ?
What PSU do you have in the new PC ?

Check that the ram is fully inserted into the slots, the catches at the end of the slots should snap into place.
Ensure the stand-offs in the case are all under screw holes in the motherboard.
Make sure you connected all the required power leads to the motherboard and graphics card.
If the motherboard has graphics connector(s) make sure you connected the monitor to the graphics card.

It’s a corsair 750W PSU, Nvidia geforce gtx 1660, Corsair Vengeance 16GB ram, a B450 tomahawk MAX motherboard, Seagate 500GB SSD.

The PC I am upgrading is a good custom Pc from a few years ago using the same PSU but with an older intel motherboard and cpu and a gtx 970. I’ve made sure all the cables are correct and followed a step by step guide. I’ve also tested the Pc outside of the case on the motherboard box, I also had no results.

The ram is fully inserted and the HDMI is connected to the GPU port. I’m not sure what else I can do.
You need to be more precise when posting parts. I do not see a processor listed and corsair makes a number of 750W units. Post the exact model# for all of your parts.
Next have you read the guide at the top of the forum for problem builds? If not, do so. If you follow ALL of the steps, you will find the cause of your no POST problem.

Common errors for new builders;
1 The 8/12pin aux/cpu pw connector not plugged in
2 Connecting video to the onboard port when a real video card is installed
3 Parts not compatible. Unknown since we have not idea what processor you installed
4 Motherboard shorted to case due to incorrect placement of standoffs

If by chance you installed a 3xxx series processor, it is not going to work until the motherboard bios is updated.

I have used corsair vengeance ram on a number of ryzen builds and it works great. I do not use the rgb models however [I am not a fan of lights]

Hello, I’m pretty sure I need to update my motherboard bios then as I am using a ryzen 3600x processor. However, since my computer isn’t posting, can I do this without a display?
Never going to work until you update the bios on your motherboard. Some high end boards have what is called bios flashback, Qflash+ etc [each board mfg calls it something different]
Checking the specs on your board, you are in luck. It has this option. Read your manual as to how to accomplish this task. This is not as easy as a normal bios flash so be sure you read and fully understand this procedure. I never use msi boards so I have never done this on msi. On an asus or gigabyte board you have to copy the bios file [after renaming the file to a specific name] to the root of a fat32 flash drive. Put the drive in the port so designated as the bios flash port, press the button for a specified time and it is done; again read your manual.

For future reference, when you do a build, the VERY first thing you do is check that the motherboard supports the cpu you intend on using. The 3xxx processors require a bios update and of course would not run until this is done.

Hi, I have done the steps to flash the bios, however when I press the flash bios button I don’t get any flashing red lights however my motherboard is powered on. Is this fine? Do I need to press it again?
As I said, I never use msi boards in any build so I do not know.
I looked at the manual and the led has to flash; when it is done flashing, the bios update should be done.
Are you sure you extracted the file to the root of a FAT32 flash drive? You cannot just copy the file you downloaded; it must be extracted from the zip folder. Are you sure you are using the correct port? It must be the one designated as the bios flashback port.
Other than that, if it does not work, you have two options;
1 RMA the board and go with a board that has native support for a 3xxx processor
2 Get hold of an older ie supported processor and use that so you can flash your bios

AMD has/had a loaner program where they would ship you a low end ryzen like a 2200 and you use that to flash the bios. You then ship it back to them. Unknown if this is still in effect; my guess is no however it does not hurt to check.
Thanks for your help, I now get a display. However I am met with “please power down and connect the PCIe cables to your graphics card.” I am currently using the cables that came with the box to go from my PSU 6 pin to 8 pin. I have photos below. The PSU is the Corsair RM750 Model 75-001937

I reset the CCOM
You do not need any adapter; your pw supply comes with 6+2 connectors ie it is an 8pin. In fact the specs list 4 of those connectors. Plug your pcie pw connector to the video card.
Here is a pic of the pw connectors for your pw supply. I circled the one you use in red. You just put the 2pin together with the 6pin for an 8pin connector. It is a little blurry since I had to blow it up quite a bit.
