Help to Install Samsung SSD

Hi, I just purchased a Samsung EVO 860 SATA M.2 500gb to replace the ssd that's already in my computer (it's an old model -128gb) I've been to the tech people in my area who charge $90 to install it and rather then that I've found its quite easy to install at home, I just need some guidance.

I'm now in the process of getting windows onto the new ssd, I already have it connected to an external hard disk converter adapter and am currently running on the 128gb ssd. I've seen recommendations of the Samsung Data Migration and Samsung Magician which I have used, both work fine and the ssd seems to be showing up on there.
I 've finished the cloning process, it did reboot and is still running as it did I haven't installed the EVO 860 M.2 yet just in case. Any advice on where to go from here?

Hi

If you have gone through all the cloning etc and it seems to be working, I would just swap it over and should be OK. Only thing you might (unlikely) need to do is adjust the boot order in the BIOS/UEFI.

One thing I would recommend is updating your Windows installation though, you current build (18363) is over a two years old now (released May 2019) and there have been at least four major updates since then. The latest build is 19042.

You have THIS HP 15-bw088au Notebook PC which was purchased in April 2018 and came with Windows 10 Home 64-bit.
It came with a 128 GB M.2 solid state drive.
It did not additionally come with a 2.5" hard disk drive or solid state drive.

I agree with Shane that you should update Windows 10 Home 64-bit to Version 21H1 Build 19043 which was released last month.
If the update process fails, a clean install and fresh start is probably your best option.

Hi Shane, thanks for the advice !!. I've swapped the ssd over and it's running real good. I've tried updating to the Version 21H1 Build 19043 however It keeps failing so I opt to a clean instillation and now the version is showing up as 10.0.14393 Build 14393. How can I update to the newest version?

Hi, I've taken both you're advice and tried updating to Version 21h1 Build 19043 but it keeps failing. I've done a clean instillation, everything is working fine with the new ssd in and a fresh start but now the version is showing up as 10.0.14393 Build 14393. How I can update to Version 21H1 Build 19043 without it failing all the time?

You may want to try here and choose update now. This process may take up to one hour or more to complete. Make sure you disconnect all your external HDD for safety precaution. Follow on screen instructions. After completion install any updates from MS.

or

Check on "update and security" and check for any updates. You shall have an option for "optional updates", click on it and you will be notified if you can install the Windows 21H1 update and just click on download and install. It should take a few minutes to complete. Follow on screen instructions. When completed check for any updates again.

How exactly did you clean install windows? Was this a "Reset this PC" from within windows OR did you make the bootable install usb using the media creation tool?
FWIW I am not a fan of resetting from within windows. IMO a much better method is to boot with an install usb, deleting ALL partitions on the system drive; then installing windows.

Version 1607 Build 14393 of Windows 10 was released in August 2016.
It's my guess that's the version and build of Windows 10 that HP laptop originally came with.
chiknez, is that correct?

Thanks !! I installed the new windows update version using the Windows Update Assistant and the version build is now showing as 10.0. 19043 Build.

I actually went over the whole process again this time using Windows Update Assistant and everything is now working with the updated version 10.0. 19043 Build now installed.

You would be correct, I'm not sure how that even happened because I was initially updating it rather then trying to restore the older version. I also noticed files were either missing or being restored. Thankfully I've managed to install the lastest build version 10.0 19043 Build and everything seems to be working fine now :)
