Dear forum members,

I need your help/advice regarding mentioned server (HP ProLiant DL380 G6) I'm unable to get screen from that server I tried three monitors on that server but no screen. When I connect that monitor I got blue light on monitor but no any screen from server. That mentioned server has two Video ports one black in color in front of server and blue one behind the server. I tried both ports but no screen??

Hi Triple6,
Many thanks for your reply. I think that color is amber on power button. Could you please explain to me what buttons I have to push after I connect that external monitor and an external KeyBoard?

There are no buttons to push, it just works unless the server has a fault.

Have you looked at the manual I posted? It has an entire section devoted to troubleshooting, starts on Page 75. Have you looked at the Insights Panel? Have you looked at the power supply LED's? Page 10 covers the Insights Panel.

Is this server new to you? Was it working and quit or you just received it and it doesn't work?

Yes that model is NEW to me. I just want to connect an external monitor and to access GUI of that server I need to install a software. But when I connect that monitor I don't get any signal on that external monitor. I tried 2 monitors also Video port located in front on server also another one located behind that server.

So it's never worked for you? Or it was working and died? It's a pretty old server. Have you contacted the seller for assistance? Is the server fully complete, does it have all the components, or was it a shell? Was it sold as fully working?

You still haven't acknowledge if you have checked any of the things I've suggested. You need to check the LED's for errors. The HP Proliant servers are packed with built in diagnostics, you need to use them. Please download the manual and read it over carefully. Have you used iLO on this or any server before?

Have you also connected a keyboard to the server? You may have to wake it up if it's sleeping and has the monitor off.

What does this server run? Linux, Windows, a hypervisor like VMWare ESXi?

Can you ping anything on the server? Access anything on it remotely?

There is no magic to make the screen work, you plug it in and press anything on the keyboard to wake up the video out. If that doesn't work then something is terribly wrong and you need to troubleshoot the issue; hence checking the LED's to see if it's running and what the fault is, same for iLO. An Amber light on the server probably means it has a fault that you need to address.

To be honest you haven't provided us with enough information which is scary if this is a server and you have been tasked with working on it.

You shouldn't connect a PS2 keyboard to a running computer; 1) it may not work if it's not connected at boot and 2) you can damage the motherboard.

You should try a USB keyboard.

Is this server accessible by any means? File shares, working email? Working RDP? Pinging?

No idea as far as I know that server has working emails for company workers. OK guys I will try to connect a USB Keyboard and to press any key lets see if I will get any screen and will come back here again to update you. Many thanks in advance guys

If this is a server that you manage you need to get you knowledge of this server, and servers in general, up to par. You should learn how the built-in diagnostics work, see if it has iLO configured and if not you need to configure it. iLo is indispensable for managing HP servers at a distance and with iLO you never need to worry about hooking up a monitor and keyboard to a server; you just log into the iLO web interface and you can see what is on screen, watch it boot, enter the BIOS, run diagnostics, monitor its hardware status everything; more than you can do with a monitor attached physically to it. iLO works with just power attached to the server, the server doesn't even need to be powered on, it's always on and available at the hardware level. Which is great when you need reboot or shut off a server from somewhere else like your office. You should also maybe invest in some monitoring software and make sure all the HP Insights software is installed on the Windows side. Also I'm worried if you have backups of this server, do you? Windows Server has built in file ad bare-metal backup built in? Are you using those?

You should also be recommending a server replacement, the G6 series is pretty old and hardware failure is pretty much to be expected.

See that changes things quite a bit and should have been what you stated in your very post. I was under the impressing this server was hung and not accessible at all. There may be nothing wrong with the server at all. Since there was no monitor or keyboard attached to the server that is almost certainly not how anyone connects to the server. They probably use RDP, iLo, vSphere or a combination of those to access the server. Few operations these these days require a network administrator to walk up to a server these days and many servers have limited physical interaction. If you use something like ESXi that runs virtual servers on your hardware then there is nothing you can do with a physical monitor or keyboard at the physical server aside from rebooting and changing it's IP address to change it's remote access. Everything else is done through something like vSphere over the network or RDP or ConnectAnywhere, etc. Headless servers are pretty common, you should be trying to access the server over the network if it's running.

My advice is to not touch the server, you are well over your head and you need to seek assistance from a more senior tech or admin that is 100% familiar with this server/network. Absolutely do not physically turn it off .
