Help Please... Home network

Good morning Guys.

Please help. I would like to set up a home network. what i would like to achieve is to have some kind of server or hard drive that can be accessed by all devises in the house like tablet, phone, PC and laptops and TV. the problem came in when i used to have documents, videos and photos saved on a portable external hard drive, so every time my wife used it she unplug it and plug it in to her laptop, then when i want to use the files etc i unplug it and connect it to my laptop. Now, it was dropped recently and all my data is gone, due to it being moved around a lot there was an inherit risk of dropping it. So i have to start all over again to gather all data and make backups etc. However, is there any way that i can have a "central" storage location, whereby it can be accessed from different devices around the house, like my smart TV, laptops, tablets etc, preferably all wireless as i do not want a cable to run from this central point to every other device in the house, without having to unplug the storage medium every time and connect it to different/new devises via USB every time?

If it is possible, what would i need to purchase and how do i need to "install / set up" all the items etc? Please guys, i am not tech savvy at all, and really need detailed explanations/help regarding this.

The "magic" phrase is Network Attached Storage (NAS). That link will give you a description (way more detailed than needed). A web search for that phrase will find lots of specific units. I have not yet used one, so cannot give any recommendation.

Another option, which could be used with or instead of a NAS is a cloud service. Depending on your needs there are free ones provided by Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc. I use a for-pay one called SugarSync that syncs the files on my Windows computers, and also serves as a "NAS in the cloud." Downside of that is it may also sync for Android, but not for iOS and Linux distributions, and sometimes fails to sync properly on Windows.

Any storage option requires backup(s) for data you do not want to lose.
