I am writing this on behalf of a friend, I am going around to his place later on to try and help sort the problem out. I thought I would post here though so that by the time I get to his I may of had a reply and can work from that, just in case I can't work it out.

From what I can gather, he can't get connected to the net via his router using ethernet, but can do via the router if it is connected via USB. Everytime he tries to access the setup menu for the router it just says "cannot connect to page" or words to that effect. If he connects the router via USB the net connection seems to work. He has a Safecom router, which is connected to his PC via either USB or Ethernet (both have been tried solo). His ISP is tiscali and is ADSL. The ADSL light is green on the router. Ethernet is enabled in his bios. PC is Windows XP, Athlon XP.

I have not been around there yet so I have not been able to try anything else out. But if anyone has time to list some ideas then I can try them. Here are some I know I will try.

1. I will test to see if he has the ethernet connection enabled and working for other tasks
2. I will try to reload all ethernet drivers

Any other ideas ? Thanks everyone in advance, greatly appreciated !! :)

Thanks for the info.

We have another problem. He managed to get the router to work by disabling DHCP and adding in a IP of 192.168.1.x and he also had to change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 as he says any other will stop his ethernet working.

The problem is DHCP is now disabled, and we need it enabled to work with a media centre device he has. How can we enable DHCP but make sure that the ethernet still works ?

Many thanks.

If you'd give us the make/model of the modem, router, and the version/patch level of Windows, that would be a good start. There's no reason that you should have to enable manual addressing.

First off, you should load SP2, you're open to a lot of issues without it, and you also can't get any Windows updates.

I'd reset the router to factory defaults and re-enter the name/password for the ADSL account, then see if you can connect. I don't know what's going on, but other than the account details, you should get wired connections with the default configuration and automatic IP addressing on the clients.
