I purchased Home Networking kit from my ISP- SBC. I purchased a refurbd IBM Thinkpad 570 OS98-SE. I hired a "Pro" to clean out my old Gateway OS98, and to add memory to both, as well as set up the Network. (ethernet, router, "2Wire pc card") Everything was great, except "my laptop was not recognizing my printer" (attached to the desktop). Well the check was cashed and my "Pro" never called me back. I foolishly tried to get my laptop/notebook to recog the printer, on my own.

In messing with ports, connection settings etc. My laptop now is disconnected from the home portal. My pc card says "home portal not yet activated". I tried reinstalling the software that came with the installation kit, but it fails in the test connection. I don't know where to start to get it back to the way it was.

I think part of my prob is in within the device mgr. (by connection) I added and took away stuff I shouldn't have.
Can anyone tell me what I should have or check.

Is this correct?

You are using SBC DSL with two computers and a router?

**********************

Things that need to happen for this to work.

1. Network has to be running properly - sounds like it was and now it is not.
2. Router is setup to log in to your DSL service - probably still is

***********************

Do not be alarmed about your attempt to use the SBC software again on the notebook and it does not work. That software package assumed that the DSL modem is hooked directly to the client PC.

***********************

If you want this to work again, we have to focus on the little two computer network you have there and once that is running normally, all things with the router will fall in to place.

************************

If I was working on this, I would remove the SBC-Yahoo software from the notebook although that doesnt have to be done.

If you are using a router, then all that software you put on the notebook is not needed, unless you like the content related stuff.

*************************

Verify the notbooks network adapter is setup correctly. You were correct in thinking this is where the prooblem should be.

You are using Windows 98 - *thinks back* - - Go to this link and follow the steps there http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=814239

That will allow you to verify if your network card is setup and the settings are about what they should be.

Then come back here with some feedback

This particular problem is so easy to solve in person, ill tell ya.

Please, clarify how your PC and laptop are connected to the SBC "device". This will help jameso321 know how you are configured so his help will be more accurate. Is one PC connected via Ethernet adapter and one connected via USB adapter? Or is the laptop connected wirelessly?

jameso321 -

I have worked with the SBC Yahoo Home Networking kit before. Typically, this device is a combination modem, router, and wireless router. It supports Ethernet connections, wireless 802.11b connections, and "phone network" connections. It only has ONE Ethernet connection and ONE USB connection for downstream devices - which is why I asked jxik how he was configured.

Hope this helps :)
