Help downgrading to windows XP from vista

Hello, I have an old (circa 2005) E-Machines desktop that i recently dug out of storage to mess around with. around 2008 it was all kinds of messed up (hand me down from my brother) so with the help of a friend i wiped the system and reinstalled the xp OS. Turned out it was a non-genuine copy and at that time i did not comprehend that i have a registry key on the back of my pc. I found a copy of windows Vista that my brother had bought for the pc and never installed so i did that. it's running O.K. just very slow and takes literally 10-15 minutes to start up. I figure that if i downgrade back down to windows XP the computer will have a lot less work trying to run it's OS considering it only has a 1 GB of RAM (which i upgraded from 512mb this pc is so old).
Also, important to note - at some point my disc drive stopped working. It makes noises as if it is trying to open and close when i press the button but it does not open. i have run a thin ruler around the edges and it doesnt seem to be jammed and i cant get far enough in to pry it out. if anyone has some suggestions on that feel free to comment, but that is not the focus of this post.

So i have downloaded a copy of windows XP (going to use my own registry key) and extracted the zip file onto a flash drive. From here i'm kind of lost. if i open the .exe from on my pc, "Install Windows XP" is not clickable. When i boot my PC from the flash drive, it does nothing but sit on a black screen with that blinking underscore in the top left corner. I'm sure there's something much more complicated to do but it's difficult for me to find information that takes into account my lack of disc drive. Some detailed help is greatly appreciated! thanks

Any copy of windows xp that you download is not a legal copy because Microsoft will never allow anybody to download any copy of windows. The only way you can get a legal copy of a windows xp cd is to contact your pc manufacturer or any local computer store & ask them for a windows xp cd. Since your cd drive isn't working you'll have to replace it with a new internal cd drive or get an external cd drive that can be plugged into a usb port. If you decide to keep vista i would recommend having a minimum of 2 GB of ram on your pc because vista requires more ram than xp.
From site rules:
Use of Pirated Software - Because we do not support pirated software, we may request that you provide validation to confirm that your copy of Windows or other software is not pirated. If you are unable or unwilling to provide this validation, your thread may be closed.
A downloaded copy of windows could be considered Pirated Software so if you install your downloaded copy of windows xp you will not receive any help from TSG & one of the site moderators will close the thread if necessary.

Please read all the site rules before your next post by clicking on rules at the top of the page.
Agree with the above with some small additions. You could also borrow an XP installation CD from a friend, relative, etc. For Windows 8.1, but no previous versions, Microsoft does now (very recently) provide a .iso online. And they have not shut off all online copies of Windows 7 (provided by a Microsoft partner).

Have you tried opening the CD tray with a paper clip inserted into the hole provided for that purpose?
O.K. Update. i managed to get my disk drive open. it doesnt however seem to register any discs i put into it. any tips on that?
And if i get it working, let's say i find a windows installation CD, is it as simple as booting my pc from the optical drive or must i do somthing else first?

Yep, that simple. The only complication is that it will prompt with "press any key to boot from CD" and sometimes you only have a second or two to react. So keep your eyes open and your finger poised over the "any key."

What's the model series (C - W) and model number of that eMachines desktop?

What's the serial number and SNID number on it?

Model: T6410

The eMachines T6410 desktop supposedly came with Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit.

It supposedly has:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.20 GHz processor

160 GB hard drive

DVD+/-RW disc drive

ATI RS480 chipset

ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics

Realtek AC'97 audio

Realtek 10/100 Mbps ethernet

-------------------------------------------------------------

Its motherboard has 2 memory slots and supports a maximum of 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM.

It uses 184-pin DDR PC3200(DDR400), 2.5 volt, CL=3, unbuffered, non-ECC modules.

Hello, i have an old (circa 2005) emachines desktop. the disk drive stopped working a while back, cant remember exactly when, this thing has been in storage for a while. it made some noises inside the unit but wouldnt open. today i figured out a way to pry it open after pushing the button and was very excited (because i would like to reinstall windows XP since i have upgraded to vista). However, now i realize that the pc does not recognize the drive. any disc i put in does not open anything. the drive does not show up under "My Computer" and i dont see it in device manager. the emachines website does not have any drivers for the optical drive listed and i cant seem to find the appropriate one - if that even is the problem.

Any help please??

Here are the specs for my pc ( i have upgraded to windows Vista and 1 gb of RAM)

i have merged your threads please do not start a new thread for the same problem
To see if your DVD drive is having a driver issue go to start menu & right click my computer & click manage. In the left column click on Device Manager & let us know if your DVD/CD Drive is listed there. If it shows any errors please post them as well.

You really should replace the disc drive.

You can buy a reliable replacement one for about $30.00 that reads and burns both CD's and DVD's.

--------------------------------------------------------
Go back to device manager & at the top of the list right click on your computer's name & click on Scan for Hardware changes. If it finds your dvd drive follow the on screen instructions to reinstall it. If it doesn't come up then it may have accidently been disconnected or it doesn't work anymore & has to be replaced like flavallee suggested.

It will be a couple of days before i can reply to anything you post because the city i live in was just hit by a very bad lake effect snow storm & another one that's just as bad as the first is coming tonight. If you can't wait until i return i'm sure flavallee or another user will assist you in my absence.

Stay warm and safe, and don't become another of its casualties. I read about it this morning. I cannot imagine seeing something like that bearing down on me.
