Help! Cd-Rom not working most of the time

I have a Yamaha CRW8824E Cd rom drive that 99% of the time doesn't work. The lights light up but it usually can't detect any cd in the drawer. Could this be due to a corrupted driver? Not knowing much about computer repair, I thought it might be worth checking and so I downloaded a new driver after hours of searching. I wasn't able to find a Yamaha disc with the driver on it around my home. Microsoft ME might also have the driver, but I don't know how to go about it. Anyway, I do have the driver on a floppy now. When I try to install it, my computer tells me I have the best driver. Do I have to delete the present driver first? If so, how would I go about doing that? If the driver doesn't seem like the problem, any other suggestions?

I was also looking into the possibility of getting a removable harddrive so that backups are made easier and getting back on track if I have a hard drive crash would be painless. How do they work? Would I buy two of the same hard drives, same size and brand etc.? I currently do backups to a cd-rom. Is this kind of removable hard drive hard to install? Any other suggestions?
I have Windows 2000 and Windows 98 on one computer, Windows ME on another.

Thanks for your time and help everyone!

Hi Streaker, I'll try to address your question on the cd drive.....

If it's NOT working 99% of the time, first you need to check the connections inside, power, and the gray cable as well to be sure they are secure......to the drive and to the motherboard...if they are, then there's a 99% chance the drive is failing.
