Helicopter HELP Required ???

1894 Views 39 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  oldie
Malta's civil helicopter service, which operates between the islands of Gozo and Malta, has to be replaced due to stricter safety regulations being enforced by the EU and Brussels.

The problem is finding a supplier of ejector seats specifically for helicopters

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks - Oldie

We have three of these. Made in Bulgaria 36 years ago and flown by Russian crews. Maltese flight crews won't touch them with a barge pole

Why do you need ejector seats again? Doesn't you Bulgarian helicoptors have counter-rotation too? :p

Why do we always have to add sexual innuendo to a thread that may involve life or death

Post #6 sure sounds serious to me....yep....life or death.....
The Russians have a small production attack/reconnaissance chopper with an ejection seat. The seat mechanism fires explosive bolts on the rotor blades. I actually think it is a good idea as attack choppers are now expected to engage other helicopters and even aircraft. Once two choppers are engaged one or the other crew is going to die without ejection seats. I think an ejection seat would make the crews more aggressive at taking on other choppers – I know it would affect my thinking if I was deciding whether to engage a couple of Apaches. http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/vvs/ka52-01.htm

I can’t imagine that a civilian helicopter would have an ejection seat though. You usually have to eject in a seat trainer a few times as part of recurrent training and people still screw up and kill themselves. Downward ejection would be dicey in a chopper since they are often at low altitude. And if you blow the blades to eject upwards everyone has to go pretty quickly. The passenger briefing would take longer than the flight. Could you imagine briefing an old lady on how to use an ejection seat? Or telling a mother with an infant to hold on to it very tightly?

The F104 initially came out with a downward ejection seat. Pilots learned to roll upside down to eject at low altitude. They were in the transition phase to upward seats when a 104 driver had an engine failure on takeoff and rolled inverted to eject – unfortunately he had one of the new upward seats on that particular plane. Many squadrons grounded them until they had all of them converted after that incident.

The chopper in the photo has a single rotor but appears to have dual turbines. You can usually land OK if one of the turbines fails, but if you throw a blade it is all over – even with counter rotating blades.

Instead of a four blade prop, how about a having just a one blade prop--a BIG one, with a counter-weight on the otherside??. Would give a person a much better chance of not getting whacked. Supprized the Bulgarians didn't think of it!!!

You mean "auto-rotation"? (counter rotation is a term that only applies to more than one propeller or rotor, else what is being "countered")

GB,

So I got suckered. (and I did the search, but as I said, it is funny because of the phrase, that doesn't mean it hasn't been explored)

If you think having your wing(s) spin is a good idea, than likely you would think an ejector seat a good idea too. ;) (and a parachute, some good drugs before hand, lower synapsis count, etc., etc. )

(sorry Pave :D )

Allow me to apologise for my Brit sense of humour, which may possibly have been misinterprated by some.
