Evidently Antec's SmartPower 2.0 series had a really bad run about 8-12 months ago, and now hordes of them are dying. I ended up with one of these and, like the others, it suddenly began making a loud whining sound and died shortly after. This seems to mainly affect the 350 and 450W models. Just a heads-up in case no one knew about this. I had a 450W and replaced it with a 400W, so hopefully this one won't die ;)

Ive had good luck with Antec but theyre all old ones 350 and down, 2-3 years old. I bought one of those Thermaltake 450watt jobbies when they were on sale for $29 at newegg, so far so good, stable and runs quiet.

Just Googled Antec PSU trouble and there's quite a bit of trouble outlined in different forums. Most seem to center on bad caps. One reviewer seemed to imply that the TruePower models were OK.

Ahh... It's probably just fine. One thing about reputation is when Antec or any other manufacturer gets a good rep then more people buy them. The natural result is when more units are in service then more problems get reported. It may be the same percentage as before it just looks worse. Like the Yugo. :D

Well, when you install it for him and boot up for the first time set a password in the BIOS and don't tell him what it is until he signs an elder care contract for your old age.

I wonder if it's the same huge batch of bad caps that got so many motherboards about 3 years ago? I had to MB's bite the dust, I managed to revive one with replacement caps, the other was a goner.

Curious isn't it. One of the threads I read said that Antec had changed from having Enermax build their units (or parts of their units) to another company and they're now back to Enermax. So many parts are built by so called competitors I wonder what we're really buying. Maybe your mobo's were subcontracted out to ECS.
