HDMI to VGA/ DMI stopped working

Hello-

For a few years I've been using an HDMI to VGA adapter to run an older e-Machine monitor as a second screen off my Dell i5566 laptop. It was working fine when I had to unplug everything for some home renovations I had done. Now, I can't get the Dell to recognize the other monitor. I went ahead and picked up an HDMI to DVI adapter and plugged in a slightly newer Acer monitor, but that doesn't work either. In both cases, the monitor just says No Signal. I've gone into Display Settings and tried to Detect Monitor many times, but it doesn't detect anything.

I was going to update the drivers in my Device Manager, but I couldn't find any listing for HDMI. Under Display Adapters there is just Intel HD Graphics 620 listed, but when I select Show Hidden Devices, the Acer monitor is visible with the HDMI connection but it's still grayed out. Under properties it states that the Device Is Not Connected. I've tried updating the driver and scanning for new hardware, but it doesn't work.

Under monitors it just lists Generic PnP monitor. I'm not as into tech as I used to be so maybe HDMI is never listed in Device Manager, but I thought it would be. Could my HDMI be faulty?

Any thoughts before I start looking into running a second monitor from USB?
Thanks,
jtn
