My Toshiba 500gb hdd is making loud clicking noise. I have checked it using various hdd diagnosis utilities but non of it reported any problem. The smart status is good and no read write error is reported.. should i be worried about it and replace with a new one??

How old is your Toshiba(no description given), and is that the original hard drive in it?

A clicking or tick-tock sound is a good sign of a failing hard drive.
If you haven't backed up your important personal data(documents, photos, etc.) to some reliable external media, you should do it now.

Thanks for your reply..

it is about 2yrs old but i haven't used the desktop that much.. im also thinking to make a backup..

any utility you think would be best to make system image and restoring the same to the new replacement hdd??
All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail. If the data is important to you, you make backups.

I use and recommend acronis true image. There are free programs available however IMO acronis is far superior to the free ones. The only free imaging program I use is clonezilla which is linux based AND not the easiest thing to use however it is very reliable and has never failed to restore an image for me.
BTW if you are going to replace the drive, go with a quality drive like a WD black drive. Those are much better quality than a toshiba drive.

Clicking hard drives are never good. If you intend a wait and see approach make sure you have a backup. As the laptop is 2 years old an ssd would help speed it up a bit. Samsung evo drives are worth a look.

It is not a laptop however a ssd would help his desktop.
i downloaded acronis trial version. Let me try both clonezilla and acronis.. Thanks for the help everyone..
Some brands/models of hard drives click occasionally as part of their operation. I've also heard one failing, and it's a louder and constant click, and the drive won't work at all.

It is not occasional it is constant. It never clicked before, and if it did it was not so loud and audible. I guess the HDD is dying. But i will wait and watch and will keep making periodic backups.

I already moved most imp files to cloud.
