HDD install fail

Hi,

I am so grateful that I can ask my question here. Thanks to anyone who can help out. I have an HP Omen Obelisk 875-0084 and I am adding a second hard drive Toshiba x300 4tb. I've installed extra storage before and never had a problem but when I plug it in the motherboard with the P6 and sata the computer does not boot I just get a black screen and trying to enter bios takes a long time pressing F10 (or F12 not sure haven't tried since last week but I did get in) and when I'm in bios it does not detect the hard drive. There are no loose cords and the hard drive is sitting correctly. When I unplug the hard drive and turn the computer back on it boots normally. Again thanks for your time. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. And if I can provide any more info let me know.

Ben

Hello and welcome to TSG!!

If I had to guess, it may be that your SSD boot drive shares with the secondary SATA port. In other words, it may be that you can use either/or, but not both.

Thanks for the reply! I have the 500gb (SSD) and a 1tb (HDD) and I put the new drive in the open HDD space. If they only allow two drives why have room for three?

Hi
My guess also would be that the sata port you plugged into is coming up as the 1st boot device in the bios.
However I would at least expect an error saying no boot device. Can you put the new drive in then boot to BIOS and see what drive is listed to boot from.

Also I can only find minimum specs on the motherboard So I can't say for sure that your BIOS will handle a 4TB Secondary Drive. I do know that it will definitely take a 2nd drive but no info available on what size.
Do you have a drive smaller than 4TB you could at least try for troubleshooting ?

Hey thanks for replying. I'll try to get into bios now and take a picture of the boot order. I don't have another hard drive but I might have to buy one to check.
Go the bios way first. Buying another HDD could be a waste of money.
You could try HP support - Not the virtual one. HP Support and see if they have any idea - not much hope.
The spec page shows the mother board specs and on the pic I can see it has room for a 2nd HDD.
Just no details as to limits.
Cheers

I have the drive plugged in and the first screen I see is the black screen. I press F10 until gives me this error. A few times I got into the bios but no luck today. Yes I think HP support might be of some help since they have my exact specs. Gonna try to get into the bios again tomorrow but most likely I will call HP Support. Thanks for the help! I'll post here tomorrow with results.

I am reading the chip set specs now to see what I can find.

Could not find anything on drive size in chipset data sheet.
I did come across this (pic attached). May be worth unplugging the drive and having a poke around in the BIOS.

So you can choose to have two non-M.2 drives, rather than one of each? If you go for capacity over speed, the cost would not be prohibitive. Options ...

Since your machine has 4 months of warranty left, perhaps contacting HP via their web/online chat might help? There may be a setting that is preventing the drive from working.

To confirm, do you have an NvME drive connected?
