Hardware RAID vs Software RAID?

I currently have 4 250gb HDD's and i am going to RAID them through RAID 0, although i am not sure whether i should use a RAID controller, or RAID them using the software in BIOS. I have found a RAID controller for $38 at my local tech store, it supports up to 4 SATA 2 (3gb/s) ports, which is what i need. Although, i am hesitant as to which would be faster, this RAID controller, or setting up RAID 0 through BIOS?

Thank you.

A $38 RAID card is likely no better, possibly even worse than the RAID offered by the motherboard, which would be considered firmware RAID, which at $38 the card is probably the same. A true high performance hardware RAID controller will cost hundreds of dollars.

But without exact model numbers it's hard to give a firm answer.
