I bought a dell laptop just over a year ago, and about 6 months in had a major hard ware failure, but to this day have never figured out what it is, basicallyt its a blue screen error that randomly comes on at first it was a rare problem occuring once or twice every week basically its an error that says the computer was shut down to prevent damage there was a probelm with somethign somethign something (running windows xp)

then the error became more frequent and by the end the windows xp loading screen would come on and it would crash then ever time.

now obviously after re formatting a 100 times and the error reoccuring i rang dell and they started replacing bits

first the hard drive, then the hard drive again, then they replaced the mother board and cpu basically every important componant

eventually i got so fed up of ringing i sort help online and luckily found somone i knew on a forum worked for dell, he managed to get my laptop replaced and all wads well

as luck would have it, they forgot to pick up the laptop so i still have it here with me

so as you can imagine i would like to fix it myself as there is no point keeping a bust laptop around

yesturdasy i install windows 98 no probelms and am goinna try putting xp back on, but i dont htink it will work for long

basically the laptop is fine except for this error

the only other problem is the modem stopped working which i have just removved incase that was cvausewing the problem

anyway anyone have any idea what can cause this typoe of error could it be one of the componants not replaced i.e. the ram and grfx card?

if u need more info i will try to solve it but i really could use this problem fixing cheers :)

Basically it could be anything, and RAM would be the first thing I would look at. Most graphics cards are built into the motherboard on laptops so that may have been replaced as part of the motherboard. You can download a memory tester from here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp and run that. Press T to run the extended tests.

If the laptop is indeed yours to do as you wish then I would sell it; people will pay nicely for the LCD panel alone. However, DELL probably wants it back as they put several new parts into it and they almost always want their parts back no matter what.

right i will run that test i ran a simalar one a while ago and thast said the ram was unresponsive but i dont believe the test worked correctly.

well they rang me to ask for it back and left me a message but i wasnt there too answer the phone and there was no way i was wasting any more money ringing them back

so they rand two more times when i wasnty around

and it has been 2 or three months now and not another word from them so i assume they have forgoten if i do sell it i will tell em i threw it because it was no good lol

thing is i wanna sell it but i dont recon i will get a good price for itr without it working

and the graphics card is a seperate card as you can remove it and its where the screen plugs in so i guess its the graphics card

i haver another quation for you there

is there anyway of getting an lcd screen like that to work as an external moniter an adapter of some sort cause i wouldnt mind the lcd panel to use as a second moniter on my curtrent laptop (for when i am animating with maya?)

cheers for your reply
