My laptop does not boot up.
When I go into set-up it does not show the harddrive.
When I try to boot up it gives a message that there is no bootable device.
Is the harddrive defective?
How can I check this.

Well it could be loose. If you can access the hard drive I'd pull it out and then put it back in; the drive should be accessed easily in most laptops by a panel on the bottom or side.

I'd also check to see if you can feel the drive spinning.

I took it out several times but no luck.
I can not hear or feel it spinning.

Then it might be dead. Not much you can do other then replace it.
