I would download the tool aplicable for your brand of hard drive http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/be_hdd2.html and run a diagnostic test on the drive first..If it has been havng probems copying files to it then there may be a problem on the drive itself..
You could start from scratch and do a low level format which would take out the partition and write zeroes to the drive thus restoring it to factory condition unless the drive itself is failing.
