Hy guys and gals:

Trying to decide on a hard drive for a system to build for myself and am unsure as to the brand to go with. I have thought either Maxtor or Western digital..Any thoughts and input welcome.

You have more than just the hard drive to look at. You will also need to look at the capabilities of the motherboard, like does it support sata. I have used both brands you mention and have good luck with them. I would also suggest you do not buy one that is OEM but get a retail version to get the full warranty. Also look at the speed of the drive and access time.

I would actually say western digital or seagate. I have had the most luck with western digital, and I have never had a problem with any of their hardware. Those western digital raptors are very nice hard drives. As far as Maxtor goes, I have never worked with a Maxtor, but they seem good quality. I guess it's just a preference thing . If you want the best of the best, go with one of the 15,000 RPM seagates from newegg.com

It does appear to be one of those instances where it comes down to personal preference as some of the feedback so far leads me to believe the quality is much the same between the two..Thanks everyone.

The Western Digital undoubtably uses an ATA100 interface while the Maxtor uses an ATA133 interface.

So you're telling me that there is not one WD out there that has ATA133? Either way, I would prefer to buy a seagate over a maxtor. It is your choice, really all hard drives function the same way and do the same thing, you just want to look at how fast, how much money, and what interface you want to use.
