Hi

I am all of a sudden receiving and message that says this "failure predicted on hard disk 0. Warning immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent"

My laptop is a toshiba, I am running windows ME, have all the virus protections installed. This just started as I was surfing. I removed any new downloads but it is still happening. My computer is only 2 yeaars old I don't think my hard disk should be fried.

Is it toast or could it be something else??

Thanks,

Kelly

You must have some type of harware/harddrive monitoring on the laptop, something triggered it to create that message. try rebooting the laptop

hi,

i have rebooted and it still comes up. This happened 3 days ago. i can sometimes get it to boot up fine but very slow and other times I get that message and then i have to press F1 to boot.
Then after about an hour it will just shut down.
Ky son has an external hard drive that I want to back some file to. Is it a hard process to do ?

Thanks,
Kelly

If the laptop has a CD/DVD drive that can Read & Write then the very first thing that you should be doing right now is copying all your important files to CD/DVD.

Stop rebooting. The last time you rebooted may be exactly that - the last time that the disk will boot.

The most likely reason for the message is that you have S.M.A.R.T. active on your system. If you want to know more about S.M.A.R.T. then click here: http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/smart-technology.html

Once you have all your data files safely on CD/DVD then it is time to think about rescuing the System and your Programs.

You have some alternatives, for example, you could create an "Image" of the System partition and save that to another disk. Acronis True Image is a good product, but if you purchase this product please read the User Guide from cover to cover before you do anything. Imaging software requires some understanding, planning and careful implementation. You can find out more about Acronis True Image here, where you will also be able to download a free trial version : http://www.acronis.com/

Another alternative is to try and save the disk itself. SpinRite is probably the best product of its kind currently available. Its not cheap but it does do what it says it can do. You can find out more about SpinRite here : http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm
