A friend has a Compaq laptop with XP Home Edition OS. He purchased this computer NEW approx. 1 yr. ago but due to extenuating circumstances has never really used it since. In attempting to get it going again, this AM, we encountered this error message which pops up after it first boots up and has been running for a short period of no longer than 3 to 5 minutes. The error message reads:
Generic Host Process for Windows 32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about the problem: Yes or No. Then it goes on to provide a detailed Error Report which I failed to record.
My suspicion is that during the interim of non-usage he has failed to download and install any of the "fixes", which MS floods us with almost constantly, and that he will be unable to access the Internet again until they are all brought up to date. Is this the problem or could it possibly be a problem with his ISP, which is Earthlink (dial-up modem connection)?
