hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me with my problem - I tried ringing our UK support line but I was told the queing time was at least 14 minutes and the damn company charges £1 a minute!!!! So I hung up!

Ok here is my Problem.

With out any problem I have been running to laptops in the house wirelessly - one on XP and one Mac today the connection to the internet just stopped working completley. I checked the Modem and all relevant lights were flashing indicating all was well there, so I checked the router (Netgear WRG614) and the relevant lights were on (and flashing where required) on there also. I checked the XP laptop and it says it's connected to the Netgear Wirless routr at 54 mbps with a signal strength at Excellent (5 Bars) so as far as I could tell al was as it should but I could not log on. I tried the usual, rebooting of the modem & router & PC's etc but no joy. I disconneted the Router and plugged the LAN straight in to the XP laptop, I then Enabled the Lan on the laptop and disabled the Wireless and I could connect the the internet fine (as I am now via the Direct Lan) so the problem is clearly something to do with the router but I have no Idea what.

All I have in the router is power lead, and Lan (in the Internet port) which then plugs in to the back of the modem, like I say this has been good to go for about a year like this, it is ony today it decided to stop working.

When I was still hooked up to the router and It shows as connected, I checked the wireless connction info and this is what I got

Address Type : Assigned by DHCP
IP address : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Defaut Gateway, DHCP server and DNS server all : 192.168.0.1

(at the time of checking it still stated connection excellent, speed 54 mbps, packets sent 118, received 3)

no settings were changd prior to this going down (i.e firewalls, ISP). I have tried resenting the router via the little button at the back holding it in for 15 sec or more and again still the same problem!

can anyone please help me as I only have half a head of hear left and it's not very attractive for a young lady :D

Thanks in advance for any help

could be a firewall reseting

do you have a cordless phone - or maybe a number has one -
is the wireless set to secure - if so remove that and try unsecure
this is the same for all laptops on wireless or just one

post an ipconfig /all - see later
also down load and run this

Free software to check signal strength of wireless is netstumbler 0.4.0 available for download from http://www.stumbler.net/

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

----------------
NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below

start
run
cmd

Hello, thanks for getting back to me ill answer your questions and post my results in theorder you asked them - see if we can get anywhere

We have Digital phones, which is a main base unit downstairs with the cordless phone sat in its cradle and a secondry cradle upstairs again with a cordless phone sat in it.
Wireless security has been removed but it made no difference - its currently an open network so to speak with no WEP on it for the time being.

Here are the results for the IPCONFIG/ALL WITH the router connected :

Windows IP Configuration

Next I did a ping to 192.168.0.2 (i presume this is the address you ment for me to ping from the results i got when connected to the router?) RESULTS BELOW

Pinging 192.168.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

And I got a full reply from this with a 0% packet loss

I then pinged google again

etaf said:

It is running a Blueyonder PC guard which has its own firewall - this has always been on and no changes have been made to it since before or after the wireless stopped working but just to be sure I turned the firewall off and tried the wireless and still no - however this is only on the XP on the Mac there is no firewall set up at the moment due to an issue with it anyway. cheers

so all the laptops DONT work on wireless
BUT all work OK on LAN connection through the same router

so from the info above - you can ping the gateway - which means the laptop can talk with the router OK
but cant get on the internet or ping a web address or web address IP

No firewall running
No secruity on the router for wireless

Netsumbler can see the wireless and the S/N so thats all working OK too....

mmmm not sure... now

can you comfirm all the above is true

It is correct neither of the laptops work through Wireless. Both of the laptops work if I disconect from the router and connect the modem straight up to the laptop.

I can ping the gateway but can not ping web address or web IP's

There are no firewalls running now and no WEP on the router

Netstumbler found the router.

I have just checked all connections again an noticed (after close inspection) that one of the wires is freyed a little on the LAN - I wouldn't have thought this would be a problem though as its the same cable that when I connect direct to the laptop its fine, but when in the Router no wireless, this can't be whats causing the problem can it?

Let me just confirm the set up, Modem has Lan - connect other end of Lan to Router - router sending out signal - neither laptops can get online. BUT Modem has LAN - connect other end of LAN direct to laptop and can connect to the internet ok

due to the above this is why I thought the slightly freyed wire on the LAN can not be causing a problem as it works fine when connected to laptop - am I wrong?

Anymore ideas?

Im completley stuck

Did you turn off the modem and router to connect them, then turn on the modem first, then the router?

Hi, Yup tried this as well and just done it a second time to be sure, modem and router powered off, disconnected and reconnected LAN in back of modem and disconnected LAN in back of laptop and connected it to the back of the router, powered up modem, once powered up, powered up router - still getting the same problem.

Could it be a faulty router - even though netstumbler is picking it up?

The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 Bytes,
1492 Bytes for PPPoE connections, or 1436 for PPTP connections. For some ISPs you may need to
reduce the MTU. But this is rarely required, and should not be done unless you are sure it is
necessary for your ISP connection.
Any packets sent through the router that are larger than the configured MTU size will be
repackaged into smaller packets to meet the MTU requirement. To change the MTU size:
1. Under MTU Size, enter a new size between 64 and 1500.
2. Click Apply to save the new configuration.

Do this under the WAN settings i nthe routers configuration. there are sites out to help you select the optimal mtu or possiblt one of the techsupport people from netgear can just tell you the correct MTU size for your particular model that support looks to be free from their website.

ITPro - thanks for that info although Im not really sure what to do with it, as I don't really know what Im doing with networks in the slightlest, I just follow the instructions, Im hesitant to change anything when nothing has been changed to cause the issue.

What I really need to know is

1) Could the cable be faulty (asits slightly freyed) and even though when connected directly to the laptop it works be causing an issue when connected to the router

and

2) could the router actually be faulty, even though netstumbler can find a signal, could there still be a problem with it

If the answer to either of the above questions is YES, I can trial and error of trying a new cable first and then a new router second.

I cannot understand how it has just stopped working from one day to the next when no settings in any way shape or form have been changed - is this a common thing?

Thanks for all help though guys in trouble shooting this problem, even if it did get us nowhere lol

Also there was a critical ping step left out.
After you ping the router, can you ping an external site by IP address (e.g ping 4.2.2.1)
The reason this is important in that it is not uncommon to be able to ping by IP but not by name. If that is the case, then you have access to the Internet but simply have a DNS issue that needs to be resolved.

Not sure if it was mentioned in all this.

What happens if you connect to the router using a wired connection. Can you ping by IP and Name?
just connected to the router again (i.e cable from modem in to router, seperate cable from router in to laptop) and still no connection there either, no pinging as getting no replys again - so could all this be down to a faulty router then?

cheers

Did you turn off power on the modem when you connected the router? You MUST cycle power when you change the attached device.

Yes mate I did this, I have the router and Modem powered off every time I change/swap the connections and then turn them back on once the cables are reattached (modem first, router second)

just a quickie but do your isp's configurations match up with your modem/router as through continuous resetting mine lost its dns settings and showed automatic from isp when i set them up again no prob.
Also have your network cards still got ip addresses assigned to them if it is done automatically by the router try doing it manually (turn dhcp off).
also could be a firmware issue check to see if your up to date with all updates for your router.
But before you do any of this if you can get hold of another router try that first cut out the obvious before messing with settings ,as you say it was working.
