I need help in the worse way. I have a Compaq Presario laptop with windows xp. I also have Microsoft Exel 97. When I bought computer they put Microsoft exel 2003 on here for 30 days and I had to buy it or not use it. It kept popping up so I went to Control Panel and removed it with Add/Remove. A BIG MISTAKE Now I can't open some of my files.
Also now I have a window on my desktop open that is Microsoft Excel. In middle of screen is a smaller screen that says Microsoft Excel 97 I cannot remove it to get to my desktop. My computer will not shut down. I use start menue to do things. I cannot get to my desktop.
I try to close that window but can't. I am an old dummy so explain carefully if you know what I should do. I can get online, etc but can't get rid of that dam window. thankyou

You could try and use System Restore to a time before you uninstalled it.

Click Start then Run type msconfig click OK....then in the new window click the Launch System Restore button and choose a time before the problem.

Thankyou. The restore thing worked to a point. What I did was to remove Microsoft Excel 2003 from my computer. Now I can't open several of my files. When I click on them all I get is--file format is not valid- I have Micrsoft Excel 97. Should I download Microsoft Excel 2003? I suppose it will cost me money but I want to open those files. Some of them are backed up on a CD and I can't open them either Thankyou for your help thus far. signed dummy operator.

The xl viewer didn't work. I loaded it but still can't open previous stuff.

If I purchase and download MS Excel 2003, will that solve my problem?

There is one free one listed, but I am leary about using it. I have to send them a lot of information to get the free disk.

I really don't know which one to download from the list if I decide to purchase it??

I wouldn't personally. MS Excel is not free and I don't know how any1 could afford to give it away free. If it is legal, they paid MS large for it. They will want something in return, like your computer to spam people with.

I still can't get access to my documents with the xls viewer. Maybe it is because I do not know what I am doing which is probably the truth.

Possibly it is because I have MS Excel 97 on here????? One time I got a message that 97 was my problem and that it should be updated. I think I can only use this viewer thing for 30 days.

Either I spend a lot of money and buy Excel 2003 or start creating my documents over again.

thankyou all so much. I will try not to bother you again. Clf from Nebr.

To: Mystic Eyes, Bonk, XPSP2 and anyone else that helped.

My problem has been taken care of, except I don't understand how. All of a sudden MS Office 2003 turned up on my computer????? The lady where I bought it may have done it, I don't know. Then I used "System Restore" back to Dec. 6, 2006 and it fixed everything. I did have to update my bookmarks, etc. but it is fixed. THANKS TO ALL

Now Tech Support Guy can take all of the posts off if he wants. And I am going to look how I can contribute a few dollars to this site. Its a good one. A Senior Citizen from Nebraska spending the winter isn AZ.
