My friend's asked me to check her computer over for malware (she doesn't know how to use HijackThis and so on and is scared of it, lol, so I'm doing that bit for her). She's worried that she has some sort of virus - she tells me that she can't disconnect any sort of disk from her computer and when she tries the error message "can't stop generic volume as it contains files being used by another program." It's also occasionally freezing on shutdown.

If you could take a look at the log and advise me on what to try next, I'd be much appreciative (and, I suspect, so would she). I can't see any glaring abnormalities in the log but I'm still very much at the learning stage as far as HijackThis goes, so help would be lovely :)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Warning: Do not run Option #2 until you are instructed to do so. Running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.

  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.
  1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
  2. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG will now begin the scanning process. Please be patient as this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete, do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will be prompted. Then select "Apply all actions."
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower lef- hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file. This is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan. Avast will likely complain and throw up a virus alert but you should be able to proceed anyway.
  • You need to use IE to run this scan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log along with the logs from the AVG and Panda scans.

Yes, you are correct. I had noted the two anti-virus programs and then proceeded to forget to mention it. :)

Running two anti-virus programs is not good as they will conflict with each other so you should decide which one you want to keep and remove the other.

As for Java, I usually wait until the end for that as I don't like having a bunch of installation files cluttering up scans like ComboFix that may need to be run. :)

decide which one you want to keep
I'm afraid I'm a little ignorant in matters relating to anti-virus programs... which one is better?

Exactly what are the problems?
I think it will turn out to be an iPod problem rather than a PC one. Basically, the last few times I have synced my iPod (which is set to disk use), it has not let me disconnect it. It says that it cannot be disconnected as it contains files being used by another program. The only way I could think of to disconnect was to shut down the computer. I did so and then the PC stalled, so I had to turn off the electricity. This is why I thought that I might have some sort of malware which had installed some files onto my iPod. What do you think? Should I just go on iPod forums?

Also, where do I update my Java?

You must have paid for McAfee so I would keep that one, at least until it expires, and uninstall Avast.

Can you reproduce the exact message that you get when trying to disconnect the iPod?

EDITEDIT: It now works from the taskbar as well... It looks like the problem is solved.
EDIT: Random new development. If I right click on it in My Computer and click Eject, it works...

When I click the eject button on iTunes, it says:

The iPod "iBob" cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.

Then, when I try to eject from the task bar, it says:

The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later.

This never happened before, and I am not sure what changed on my computer so that it does this.

On the anti-virus front, the McAfee came free with my computer, so it really should not be a financial issue. I assume, then, that Avast is better?

So do I understand correctly that the problem is fixed now?

If you want one of the best anti-virus programs, I would go with Nod32 or Kaspersky. If you want a free one, I like AVG over Avast.

Yes, you need to replace your Sun java with the newest version. There are more vulnerabilities in the older versions that can be exploited.

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall all previous versions.

Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then hit Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK (this option does not exist in IE7). Click Apply then OK.

Empty the recycle bin.

You should trim down your start-ups as there are too many running. You can research them at these sites and if they aren’t required at start-up then you can uncheck them in msconfig via Start - Run - type msconfig click OK and then click on the start-up tab.
